Boyband crushes are pretty darn hard to get rid of. Which is why a lot of our teenage dream men feature heavily in our fancy lists now. See our top 10 retro popstar infactuations that we can’t quite shake off…
Boybands of the '90s; how we adored them. Blue-tacking Smash Hits posters to our walls and day dreaming of how we'd meet and marry our favourite popstars.
We can't pretend that we hadn't planned every detail of our big white wedding to 5ive's Abz Love by the time we were 12, and let's not deny that we'd nailed our 'Mrs Timberlake' signature by the time he went solo (even if we had ruined a few pencil cases along the way).
Whether you adored Ben from A1 and his floppy hair, or preferred a rough and ready Brian Harvey from East 17, there's one retro crush that you can't quite shake, isn't there? So to stop you feeling so embarrassed, we've decided to open up about our teen infatuations with a countdown of our top 10, starting with Backstreet Boys dreamboat Nick Carter…
Blonde Backstreet Boy Nick Carter's All-American looks turned teenage girls in to screaming superfans throughout the 00s (including us, of course). His charming smile, hip-hop style and shiny blonde curtains had us ripping pictures out of Top Of The Pops magazine to keep in our purses. Team that with the fact he sung the line "am I sexual" in Everybody, how could the other boys possibly compete?
If you took the most popular boy in your class, made him 100 times better looking and put him in front of a microphone, you'd end up with Charlie Simpson from Busted. Everybody knew a lad that looked a little bit like him, but not quite as hot. He had the highlights, the voice of a 30-year-old man, played the guitar and you used to think that if you ever got to meet him, maybe you'd have a chance, just maybe!
Justin Timberlake's tight bleached curls, swish dance moves and cheeky grin made him the envy of all teenage boys as girls dreamt about the US star all day, every day. He stole our hearts with songs like Tearin' Up My Heart and Bye Bye Bye and made us insanely jealous when he confirmed his relationship with high school sweetheart Britney Spears. We've forgiven him now though, just.
Jason 'J' Brown from 5ive could rap, and he had a piercing - a cool piercing that we weren't allowed to have as teenagers. Granted, it's not the best placed eyebrow piercing you've ever seen but he still had something about him which is why he was our weird leather-coat wearing crush.
Sometimes he looked like a pretty teenage girl, other times he looked like a pretty teenage boy but there was no denying Taylor Hanson wasn't pretty - and we couldn't help but have a massive crush on him. His long surfer locks and big baby blues made him stand out from brothers and bandmates Isaac and Zac, and after MmmBop was released there was no getting rid of our infatuation.
Dougie was your fancy man if you liked teenage skater boys. Master of the emo fringe, bass guitar and 50% cheeky/50% shy ratio, this British musician had us madly in love with him the day the pop-rocker released 5 Colours In Her Hair along with the rest of McFly. Throw on a couple of tattoos and 10 years and he's still firmly within our top 10 list of popstar crushes. Swoon.
East 17 lead singer Brian Harvey wasn't to everyones taste but if you were in to break-dancing cockney boys, he was your man. Often snapped topless in just his baggy trackies, he was the rough and ready crush you kept on the quiet - but we know girls, we know.
Bobak from Another Level was more of a niche crush but if you spotted him as a teen, you more than likely still fancy him now. Lurking in the background of lairy bandmate Dane Bowers, he was the dark, mysterious R&B singer you wanted to get to know. Bobak's big brows (Cara Delevingne would be proud) and strong jawline gave him model-like looks, throw in his soulful voice and you've got yourself a strong silent type right there.
What was it we loved so much about curtains? Ben Adams sported the same 90s 'do as Nick Carter, he was arguably the best looking member of A1 and even though their career was pretty short-lived (they had two number ones then split up) he made his mark on the hearts of teenage girls. It's all down to the hair, we reckon. And maybe his much-loved white tank tops.
Ok, ok. We know he's never been in a band, but he was a boy and we did used to fancy him (quite a lot). With his oversized basketball jerseys and highlighted spiked haircut - as well as his famous AND hot older brother - Aaron Carter had to be the coolest kid on the pop-block. Wooing us with romantic tracks like I'm Gonna Miss You Forever and I'm All About You, as well as making us all want to hang at his with school disco hit Aaron's Party, the Carter crush was just too forceful!
