Appearing alongside the A-list elite in Taylor Swift’s Bad Blood video is one sure-fire way to get noticed, but Zendaya Coleman had already paved quite a path for herself by the time she was kicking ass with Tay and the gang. The 19-year-old has dipped her finger into plenty of proverbial pies over the past few years, proving herself to be an all-round superwoman. So what’s the new IT girl all about?
Her career started at Disney, when, at the age of 14, she starred in a series called Shake It Up. Standing as a role model for her tween viewers, she even penned a book called Between U and Me: How To Rock Your Tween Years With Style and Confidence.
Taking her own advice, she released her debut tune Swag It Outas part of the show’s soundtrack, before launching her first solo album Replay, in 2013. That same year, she was a runner-up in Dancing With The Stars (the American equivalent of Strictly Come Dancing).
It’s safe to say she was already well on her way to stardom when the rumour mill claimed she and Zayn Malik were chatting and hoping to make music together, leading to rumours that they were dating.
But she’s all about using her voice for a good cause. Championing diversity, she has her own Barbie, who rocks her Oscars look – a white full-length dress, with long dreadlocks. After the doll was revealed, Zendaya took to social media to tell the world, ‘When I was little I couldn’t find a Barbie that looked like me, my…how times have changed’.
Coming full circle, she’s recently been spotted at fashion week, looking grown-up and behaving like a pro. We can’t help but applaud her some more for showing dedication to the fashion cause by working a dark pixie wig, before later revealing blonde cornrows.
All hail Zendaya!
