Zayn Malik has something very exciting to celebrate.
The 23-year-old has made both US and UK chart history, after his debut solo album Mind Of Mine went straight to #1 in both countries. Seriously impressive.
He’s also become the first British male solo artist to go straight to the top on the US Billboard 200 chart with his debut release.
George Michael reached #1 in 1988 with Faith, his first solo record after leaving Wham!, but he didn’t do it in his first week.
Interestingly, this is also Zayn’s debut album after quitting a band, having parted ways with One Direction last March.
Ironically, the last act to reach #1 in both the UK and US was actually Zayn’s former group, which they did back in 2012.
Zayn pushed Adele’s 25 out to claim the top spot in the UK on Friday. But it was close. MOM finished with just over 4,000 combined sales ahead of 25, according to the Official Charts Company. Oosh.
After hearing the news, an ecstatic Zayn said: ‘I want to thank all the fans and my team at RCA and First Access Entertainment for everything they have done to help me start my journey as a solo artist.
‘It really is the beginning. I can’t believe that I have managed to achieve this as a solo artist. I am very proud coming from Bradford achieving this in my home country.
‘It’s mind-blowing to me. I don’t take the support I have received for granted. My life at 23 could have been very different.’
And it seems he was still on a high yesterday, Tweeting: ‘God is great. Thank you !’
Aw. Congrats, Zayn! We wonder how girlfriend Gigi Hadid will help him mark the occasion…
