'I’d just go for days - sometimes two or three days straight - without eating anything at all'
Zayn Malik has opened up about the eating disorder he developed in his One Direction days.
We knew the 23-year-old was unhappy before he quit the band last March, but he’s now admitted that the pressure of world fame led to severe weight loss.
In his new autobiography Zayn, he writes: ‘When I look back at images of myself from around November 2014, I can see how ill I was. Something I’ve never talked about in public before, but which I have come to terms with since leaving the band, is that I was suffering from an eating disorder.
‘It wasn’t as though I had any concerns about my weight or anything like that, I’d just go for days – sometimes two or three days straight – without eating anything at all. It got quite serious, although at the time I didn’t recognise it for what it was.
‘I had lost so much weight I had become ill. The workload and the pace of life on the road put together with the pressures and strains of everything going on within the band had badly affected my eating habits.’
Zayn’s book is released tomorrow, and he’s penned an emotional Instagram post about its contents.
This reads: ‘As you guys know I am releasing my book tomorrow. This book is my diary of a period of time that I would like to share with you all.
‘I hope that there are things in the book that contextualize some of the moments and memories we have all shared together.
‘There are things I address in the book that are very personal to me, things that I have never told anyone, things I still find hard to talk about.
‘The good news is today, I am inspired, I am healthy and I am grateful. Enjoy.’
We’re very glad to hear it, Zayn.
