Thomas The Tank Engine Introduces New Characters

We don’t know about you, but Thomas The Tank Engine was definitely on the list of our favourite TV characters as children.

And today it seems that there’s, one again, a real buzz surrounding the beloved cartoon train. And for that, we’re excited.

The classic TV series is set for a huge revamp, with the announcement of fourteen new characters to join the classic blue tank engine on those famous tracks.

The new characters will come from all different parts of the globe, including India, Mexico and Brazil. Apparently, there will also be four female trains added to the gang.

The overhaul of the ’80s children’s TV classic will come in the form of a new DVD film, called The Great Race, which is due to be released later on this year, according to the New York Times.

The report says Mattel has announced that Thomas and the railway town of Sodor will be joined by new faces including Ashima of India and Yong Bao of China.

Social media has sparked a conversation surrounding the news, with it trending on Twitter all morning.

Some seem upset that the classic story has been changed at all, but having first been created as a book in 1946 by Reverend Wilbert Awdry, Thomas and his friends have already been developed from their initial beginnings.

Generally, audiences seem to be crying out for more diversity, and this can only ever be a good thing in our book.

What do you think to the addition of the new characters?
