Strictly Come Dancing: Here’s What We Know So Far

Who's in Strictly Come Dancing, who might be in it, and who we hope is in it

It’s that time of year again when telly gets a bit more sparkly – yep, Strictly’s back.

Ed Balls and Will Young have already been announced, and now we know the third contestant is going to be Laura Whitmore. She dropped a massive hint on her Instagram earlier by posting a pair of (amazing, we might add) shoes with the caption ‘New dancing shoes?’

New dancing shoes??

Sure enough, the BBC Strictly Twitter account later confirmed it.

Ed Balls was announced first when the Strictly account simply tweeted his name – much like the former Shadow Chancellor did on one fateful day back in 2011, when he tried to search for himself and ended up tweeting his name instead. Lols.

Ed’s run three marathons, so he should cope with the notoriously gruelling training Strictly contestants are put through. In an interview on Chris Evans’ radio show, he said that taking part in the show was “a dream come true” but admitted he was “scared to death” and that “Parliament was easier than this”.

Next up is Will Young, who’s going to have a doubly busy summer. Not only is he training for Strictly, he’s also promoting his new covers EP – helpfully called Summer covers – which is released on August 26.

He said he’s “always imagined himself in the show” in a statement, and tweeted his excitement. Let us know if you’re still feeling so chipper after ten tangos and foxtrot, eh Will.

The rumours

Before Will was announced, a source told The Mirror that three names would be announced this week: Louise Redknapp, Laura Whitmore and Will Young. They were right about two, but can they score a hat trick?

Birds Of A Feather actress Lesley Joseph and everyone’s fave astronaut Tim Peake are also rumoured. Reports say bosses are “desperate” for Tim, who returned to Earth in June after six months on the International Space Station, but living in space is a tough gig, dontcha know: astronauts are warned to avoid strenuous activities after being in space to allow their bodies to get used to the Earth’s gravity again.

Another name that’s been mentioned is Paul Burrell. Now, this one we CAN believe: the former butler to Princess Diana is no stranger to reality TV. OK, take a deep breath: Paul’s been on I’m A Celeb… in 2004, Celebrity Stars In Their Eyes (as Richard Gere, no less), sat in Countdown’s Dictionary Corner, helped train Australian women how to be princesses for the purposes of entertainment and appeared in last year’s Celebrity Big Brother. Strictly would be positively tame after that.

Could Paul Burrell go from ex-footman to fancy footwork?

We’ll keep you posted as we hear more – this year’s lineup could get interesting!
