Selena Gomez has revealed just how horrible it is to be the subject of body shamers.
The 23-year-old singer debuted her (seriously stunning) fuller figure earlier this year – but ended up being targeted by cruel trolls. *Sighs*.
Now she’s opened up about how she had to undergo counselling in order to move past the difficult time.
Happily, Selena has since been in a much better place. The cover of her new album Revival shows her tastefully posing naked, and there’s a poignant reason behind this.
‘I’ve been working in therapy. I’d land at the airport and people would yell out: “You’re fat!” It was awful,’ Selena tells Us Weekly.
‘I’ve been working since I was seven. This was the first year I ever dealt with anyone talking about my body. Even if I did gain weight, I’m fine. That’s what the picture represents.
‘Each year, I’m becoming more who I am. I have a little more self-awareness. I feel confident and free. I’m not going to hide in my room and be depressed.’
We’re so glad, Selena.
Unfortunately, this isn’t the only health issue that Selena has had to deal with in recent years.
Back in 2013, she took a much-speculated break from music. But now we know this was because she was suffering from lupus, an autoimmune diseases in which the immune system attacks healthy tissues.
‘I was diagnosed with lupus, and I’ve been through chemotherapy. That’s what my break was really about. I could’ve had a stroke,’ Selena tells Billboard.
‘I wanted so badly to say: “You guys have no idea. I’m in chemotherapy. You’re assholes.” I locked myself away until I was confident and comfortable again.’
But there’s one special friend who’s helped Selena through the past few months – Taylor Swift.
‘Taylor makes me feel empowered,’ she continues. ‘The way she cares about women is so adamant. It’s pulling me out of my shell.’
What a great friend.
