Selena Gomez broke down in tears as she paid tribute to her friend Christina Grimmie in Miami over the weekend.
The singer, 23 – who’s currently on her Revival world tour – was visibly emotional as she performed the track Nobody, mouthing the words: ‘I’m sorry’ to the crowd.
She then managed to gather her composure to talk about Christina, saying: ‘When she was 14, we met her and my parents and I signed her.
‘One thing about Christina and her family is that she holds her faith so closely to her. And I think it’s not about a religion and it’s not about anything or good deeds.
‘It’s just that she had faith, and I don’t really understand how this really happened, but I would like to dedicate this next song to her.’
In memory of the late singer, Selena sat at a piano to perform a moving version of Hillsong Worship’s Transfiguration.
Christina was just 22 when she was shot by a man – believed to be a crazed fan – as she signed autographs during a meet and greet in Orlando, Florida on Friday night.
She was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center in critical condition and died early on Saturday morning.
The New Jersey-born star rose to fame as a YouTuber before auditioning for The Voice in 2014, on which she placed third under the guidance of coach Adam Levine.
Selena’s stepfather Brian Teefey – who worked as Christina’s manager – has now created a GoFundMe page to help her family through the difficult time.
Brian had hoped to raise $4,000, but within 24 hours some 4,178 donors smashed that goal, bringing in a whopping $104,842.
He described Christina as being ‘like a second daughter’ on the page.
