Sam Smith Quits Twitter Following Oscar Controversy

It’s not been a good week for Sam Smith. Following his Oscar win on Sunday and that acceptance speech, there has been nothing but controversy surrounding the star. After being widely mocked and criticised on social media regarding his speech – in which he claimed he was the first openly gay man to win an Academy Award – Smith has decided to leave Twitter.

Smith fans will be pleased to here that he’s not leaving the platform for good, but is just taking a short haitus until the situation blows over.

Earlier we wrote…

Sam Smith picked up his very first Oscar last night, and the soulful star was quick to dedicate his award to the LGBT community that means so much to him.

The Writing’s On The Wall singer’s speech quickly drew attention when he made the mistake of thinking he might have been the first openly gay man to have received the award, although – to be fair to Sam – he did use the world ‘if’.

But screenwriter Dustin Lance Black has hit back at Sam on Twitter, reminding him – and the social media world – that he has also won an Academy Award before now.

Dustin told Sam that, if he has no idea who he is, he should stop ‘texting’ his fiancé Tom Daley.

The tweet read, ‘Hey @SamSmithWorld, if you have no idea who I am, it may be time to stop texting my fiancé.’

He followed it with, ‘Here’s a start’ and shared a link to footage of him collecting his own award.

Naturally, social media went into a frenzy at the sight of a potential celebrity Twitter feud. Followers of the pair were quick to react with GIFs of awkward celebrity faces.

As we’re writing this, Sam hasn’t responded, but we’re sure that he didn’t mean to offend anyone with his speech, which urged for everyone to ‘stand together as equals one day.’

We guess we’ll have to see how this one plays out…
