Did David Walliams go to far with his joke about 'asian' Michael McIntyre on this year's Royal Variety Performance 2016?
Last night saw David Walliams take to the stage at the Hammersmith Apollo in London for this year’s Royal Variety Performance.
As usual, the comedian was cracking plenty of risque jokes, despite being in the presence of royals Prince Charles and Camilla, and we were also treated to some incredible performances from the likes of Lady Gaga and Robbie Williams.
But one Walliams joke in particular was branded by viewers as a little distasteful, when during a skit about Britain’s Got Talent to celebrate the show’s 10 year anniversary, David invited a group of children onto the stage to represent the various judges from over the years.
Reading from an oversized book, David introduced each child who was dressed as a memorable BGT judge or performer, with Alesha Dixon, Simon Cowell and even Stavros Flatley.
But when he introduced fellow comedian Michael McIntyre and a young Asian boy walked onto the stage wearing Micheal’s signature floppy hair and a navy suit, viewers kicked off on Twitter.
‘Did anyone see the blatantly racist “Asian Michael McIntyre” kid on the #BGT sketch! Wow! #RoyalVarietyPerformance’, one angry viewer tweeted.
‘Am I the only one who thought the ‘Asian Michael McIntyre’ gag during the pathetic BGT history was casually racist? #RoyalVarietyPerformance’, another asked.
Whilst a third tweeted: ‘Did they really just make a slightly offensive “slit eyes joke” about michael mcintyre? Wow! #RoyalVarietyPerformance’.
In fact, the complaints were so bad that a spokesperson has since issued an apology to Express.co.uk saying: ‘There was a light hearted sketch about the story of BGT on last night’s Royal Variety Performance and no offence was intended.’
However, not everyone was offended by the joke, with others taking to social media to praise David’s gags.
‘BTW what a great performance by David Walliams tonight!! #RoyalVarietyPerformance best one in years’, one gushed.
Whilst another said: ‘@davidwalliams 1st #RoyalVarietyShow I watched for many years as they bored me. Last night I was transfixed. You were an amazing host.’
He’s always going to be an opinion-divider, but what did you think of last night’s show? Tweet us @lookmagazine.
