It's time to get excited about the brand new musical coming to the West End... Meet you in the stalls.
We are VERY EXCITED this Monday morning for one BIG reason…Moulin Rouge! is being made into a musical! *Squealllll*
The Buz Luhrman directed film staring Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman made a huge impact when it was released in 2001.
Based in the 19th century in a Parisian nightclub, the story tells of a love affair between a young poet and the club’s most notorious star. The film went on to earn Nicole Kidman Best Actress at the Golden Globes. An awards show that also awarded the film the prestigious Best Motion Picture accolade. It also won the Best Costume Design at the Oscars.
And who can forget the infamous Lady Marmalade music video for the movie? The remake was released for the film and starred Lil’ Kim, Christina Aguilera, Mya and Pink dancing in sexy underwear. Reaching number 1 in many countries, the music video cause as much of a stir as the movie. It still currently holds the record for the longest reigning number one on Billboard’s Mainstream Top 40 chart for an all female collaboration. It topped the charts for a whopping nine consecutive weeks.
Fast forward 15 years and it’s time to get excited again!
And if the all singing, all dancing film is anything to go by we know viewers are in for one hell of a treat.
Tony Award winning playwright John Logan is writing the musical whilst Alex Timbers is set to direct. The cast, venue and release date are still tbc.
Luhrmann said of the upcoming development to the stage: “It’s immensely gratifying to know that a new wave of artists will be leading Moulin Rouge! to its rightful theatrical realm.”
Watch. This. Exciting. Space.
