Pregnant Kate Middleton may have been relieved of her official royal duties ahead of her July due date, but that hasn’t stopped the busy mum-to-be from packing in the extra-curricular activities, with the 31-year-old Duchess of Cambridge enjoying a special helicopter ride with husband Prince William from Wales to London.
Kate, who is gearing up to give birth to her first child on July 13, was seen hopping on board the aircraft after a friend who was passing by hers and Wills’ North Wales home offered the married couple a lift. With pet cocker spaniel Ludo in tow, the royal pair’s pilot pal Simon Oliphant-Hope flew Kate and Wills 200 miles before dropping them off at an aerodrome in Denham, Buckinghamshire. Will and Simon took front-seat positions, while Kate, Ludo and a royal detective sat in the back.
The eight-months-pregnant Duchess (pictured above watching Will’s Sea King helicopter demonstration in Canada) was working her country casual maternity clothes with style, sporting a pair of blue denim skinnies, a loose black camisole, brown striped riding jacket and trainers, with a classic pair of pearl earrings topping her off-duty ensemble off. Prince Wills also kept it casual in jeans and a blue knitted jumper.
Onlookers at the London-based airfield didn’t even recognise the VIP couple touching down in the bright orange helicopter initially. “We had no idea it was the royal couple at the time”, one couple said.
“We had a look at the photos on our laptop a few days later and realised it was in fact Prince William and Kate. It’s amazing to think that we saw the royal couple without any crowds around them. They were like any other couple out with their dog – albeit having just been flown in by helicopter. Lupo was very well behaved. Kate let him down on to the grass and he stayed close, although you could see he was excited.”
Pilot Simon said of Kate and Wills’ airborn adventure: “I know the couple and occasionally, when I am routing past North Wales, I give them a lift if it is convenient to all parties.”
Well if you’re going to hitch a ride, why not do it in style? Now, how do we go about making friends with helicopters?
