Karen Gillan Responds To Criticism Of Her ‘Sexist’ Jumanji Costume

The ex-Doctor Who actress reassures her Twitter followers that there's a 'reason' for her teeny-tiny outfit...

Karen Gillan has hit back at those who’ve labelled her Jumanji costume ‘sexist’.

The 28-year-old actress was inundated with comments about her skimpy outfit after the first photo from the set was unveiled earlier this week.

The image shows Karen (AKA Ruby Roundhouse) alongside Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson (Dr. Smolder Bravestone), Kevin Hart (Professor Shelly Oberon) and Jack Black (Moose Finbar).

But while her co-stars are dressed modestly in camouflage gear, Karen is rocking teeny-tiny shorts, a red crop top and lace-up boots.

Tweets included: ‘Until I’m told it’s a joke, I’m going to remain angry about Karen Gillan’s #Jumanji costume. Why isn’t @TheRock in a crop top too? #unfair,’ and: ‘I love Karen Gillan. Like, properly adore her. But if there isn’t a good reason for that Jumanji costume we are BREAKING UP [sic].’

However, Karen has since responded to the criticism, telling her Twitter followers that there’s a reason her clothes are so tight-fitting.

She wrote on the site yesterday: ‘Jumanji! Yes I’m wearing child sized clothes and YES there is a reason! The pay off is worth it, I promise! #Jumanji.’

Dwayne, 44, has also spoken out, explaining: ‘Our costumes will all make fun sense soon.. #Jumanji ??.’

Hmm. We guess we’ll just have to wait and see…

Jumanji is a sequel to the 1995 film of the same name, and has been in development since 2012.

Before we embark our #JUMANJI journey here in Hawaii, we gathered our entire cast (here with me are Jack Black, Kevin Hart, our director Jake Kasdan and Karen Gillian) and crew together as our Hawaiian Kahu (priest) Cordell Keka blesses our film with powerful aloha spirit of laughter, enjoyment and love. I often talk about mana (spirit) with you guys and the mana in this room/in this moment was extremely powerful – it can take your breath away and give you goosebumps like crazy. (I was low key ready to run thru a wall in this moment;). Our Kahu eloquently spoke and reminded us that even though our faces are the ones on screen, it takes an AMAZING CREW OF EVERYONE to make this movie work. And when we get tired from long work hours to always remember the joy, laughter and fun our movie will bring to families around the world. So simple, but such a great reminder to keep that perspective of bringing joy and fun to families. Very cool. Thank you Kahu Cordell Keka for this powerful blessing, thank you Hawaii – proud to be back home and THANK YOU in advance to our hard working crew. #JUMANJI #OurHawaiianBlessing #Mana #LetsShoot
