Simon Cowell really put his foot in it last night...
Gifty Louise had a pretty rough ride on last night’s X Factor.
The 20-year-old found herself in the bottom two alongside girl band 4 Of Diamonds, having performed Fifth Harmony’s I’m In Love With A Monster the evening before.
She sang Leon Russell’s A Song For You in the sing-off, with the group belting out a rendition of Christina Aguilera’s The Voice Within.
Gifty ended up being eliminated, with every judge except her mentor Simon Cowell choosing to save 4 Of Diamonds.
But not even Simon’s vote went without a hitch. He, er, accidentally sent Gifty home before righting himself moments later.
Host Dermot O’Leary asked him: ‘Simon, the name of the act you’re sending home,’ to which the 57-year-old confidently responded: ‘Gifty.’
Gifty looked on crestfallen, before Simon clarified: ‘I’m not sending Gifty home, I’m sending the girls home.’
Crikey. Bit awkward, no?
Of course, this could easily have just been a slip of the tongue. He may have assumed Dermot was asking for the act he’d like to save. But a few conspiracy theorists have since climbed out of the woodwork.
They reckon Simon’s faux pas could be proof that Gifty’s fate was decided by producers, with one Tweeting: ‘Simon Cowell sent home Gifty accidentally because production were telling the other judges over their earphones. Messy production. #XFACTOR.’
Others wrote: ‘Relley last week, gifty this week, it should be called Fix factor not X Factor!!! #XFactor,’ and: ‘Congratulations #XFactor You’ve just proved it’s a fix and not a singing competition #Gifty [sic].’
Simon’s yet to comment on the ‘fix’ speculation, but he has spoken out about Gifty’s exit.
He said on The Xtra Factor: ‘Do you know what, it’s one of those things. I think it was a mistake, the song I chose last night. It happens and I feel bad for her and I can’t take it back.’
Whatever the case, we’re going to miss hearing that insane voice every week.
