Unless you’ve been in your very own apocolyptic desert, you’ll have heard all about Mad Max.
Hailed as a boundary-pushing movie, it had every reason to have become just another gender stereotyped action flick. Set in a desert war zone, with chase scenes and bad guys, it could have so easily landed in that category.
Instead, strong female characters take the lead, and we’re thrilled to report that there’s a whole lot of ass-kicking going on from the strong female characters.
In fact, there’s been a whole Tumblr dedicted to it. Enter, Feminist Mad Max.
Taking stills from the movie, which is currently in cinemas nationwide, these memes show positive quotes that are bound to put a smile on your face.
And, you know, Tom Hardy’s rugged yet angelic face always helps. Ahem.
And Tom’s far from just a pretty face. The film has received some criticism for its feminist angle, and this was brought to the forefront at a press conference, with a critic from Toronto Star posing the question: “Tom, I’ll preface my remarks by saying that I have five sisters, a wife, a daughter, and a mother so I know what it’s like to be outgunned by estrogen. But I just wanted to ask you, as you were reading the script, did you ever think, Why are all these women in here? I thought this was supposed to be a man’s movie?” Ouch.
The lead actor simply responded: “No. Not for one minute… That’s kind of obvious.” The audience, along with our souls, cheered.
As if we needed another reason to love this man.
And as for the memes: our personal favourite?
“Hey girl, I’ll be your wingman any day.”
We call shotgun.
