Nuts often get a bad rap. If you’re following a strictly calorie controlled diet you will be aware that nuts – although very good for you – are high in calories.
Nut fans will therefore be pleased to hear that one particular nut can actually help you shed fat.
Before you start stockpiling the peanut butter it is important to note that the savory snack with special this power is the walnut. Yes the humble walnut could be the next superfood – you heard it here first…
The study – conducted by the University of California – looked at 245 overweight women that the researchers divided into three groups. Each group were given a different diet: one followed the lower fat and higher carb diet, another a lower carb and higher fat diet, and the third group a walnut-rich, higher fat and lower carb diet.
And what they found is really interesting. The study’s lead scientist, Dr. Cheryl Rock was surprised to find, ‘that even though walnuts are higher in fat and calories, the walnut-rich diet was associated with the same degree of weight loss as a lower fat diet.’
Plus, the research showed that the group following the walnut-rich diet not only experienced a good level of weight loss, but they also saw a reduction in cholesterol levels.
Dr Rock explained that the findings might be due to the satiety levels of walnuts – a.k.a the ability for a food to make you feel full. Dr Rock commented that satiety is a “critical factor” in maintaining weight loss and something their team wants to investigate further in connection with walnuts.
