Why Healthy Shots Are Our Best Hangover-Buster!


Shot, shot, shot! Yep, it’s time to get ‘em down you. Unfortunately, we’re not talking about the tequila or vodka variety (sorry), but so-called ‘super shots’ are fast becoming one of the biggest health trends. Why? Well, blitzing up mini versions of superfoods, or spice, veg and fruit combos, is the cheapest and easiest way to give yourself a health hit. ‘It’s no surprise that they’re growing in popularity,’ says nutritionist Kim Pearson (Kim-pearson.com). ‘They’re quicker, cheaper and less sugary than smoothies and juices. Treat them like a health boost rather than a meal replacement, and make downing them a daily habit.’ Shot glasses at the ready…



The Skin-Smoothie Shot

Ingredients: A splash of tomato juice and quarter of an avocado

Super powers: ‘Tomatoes could not be more packed with lycopene, which is theantioxidant-laden ingredient for helping to keep your skin soft and smooth, protecting it from drying and wrinkling sun damage,’ says Kim. ‘Chuck in some good-fat filled avocados and you will have peachy perfect skin.’



The Anti-Inflammatory Health Shot

Ingredients: A splash of prune juice, a pinch of turmeric and a teaspoon of freshly grated ginger

Super powers: ‘This combo is ideal for keeping our bodies super healthy, as many illnesses and long-term issues are caused by inflammation,’ says Kim. ‘Blended together, they can help calm things right down, especially tummies, leaving everyone fighting fit.’


The Weight-Loss Shot

Ingredients: Cooled green tea, half a teaspoon of cinnamon and a few ground flax seeds.

Super powers: ‘The green tea kick-starts your metabolism, aiding weight loss, cinnamon keeps your blood sugar levels steady so you avoid chocolate-related cravings and the flax seed keeps you, ahem, regular, making slimming a lot easier,’ says Kim. ‘If you can stand the taste – and it is a bit odd -add chilli flakes or power for an extra metabolism boost.’ It may remind you of nasty shots from years gone by, though!

The Energy-Boosting Shot

Ingredients: Matcha powder and a good quality, single shot espresso.

Super powers: OK, so you might look a bit odd mixing green powder into your morning espresso, but this is the easiest of our health shots. You just stir and go. ‘Matcha powder is ground green tea, made from the whole leaf and stalk, so you get all the goodness and extra va-va voom,’ says Kim. ‘And you know all about caffeine – this concentrated hit is dreamy as a pre-workout shot in the morning. Just don’t down it after lunch if you want to get any sleep that night!’



The Look-Younger Shot

Ingredients: Berries (raspberries and blueberries), half a teaspoon of turmeric and some pomegranate seeds.

Super powers: Turmeric speeds up your skin-cell turnover, meaning a young fresher face. ‘Pomegranate contains youth-specific compounds to help you turn back the clock and berries contain back-to-the-future antioxidants. Plus they taste good,’ says Kim.
