True crime is having a real moment.
With Making A Murderer spiking interest around real-life documentaries, the viral podcast Serial is also finding itself back in the headlines. But, thankfully, for an amazing reason.
If you’re one of the few people that hasn’t yet listened to the audio series, which sees reporter Sarah Koenig exploring the case of Adnan Syed and the murder of his high school ex girlfriend Hae Min Lee, we’ll warn you now that there’s a lot of spoilers coming your way.
Oh, and we also highly recommend that you download the podcast episodes to your iPhone, pronto.
Adnan Syed, who was convicted back in 2000, has been serving a life sentence. And this week, we’ve had a first glimpse at what Adnan looks like now, and it’s a far cry from the school photo we’ve all come to recognise since Serial went viral.
Adnan, now 35 years old, was pictured on his way into court, wearing shackles and a prison uniform. He also sported a kuffi, a cap worn by some Muslim men, and also seems to have grown a beard during his time behind bars.
After years of petitioning by his lawyers and supporters, Adnan is currently back in court to have his case revisited, after his request to reopen was granted.
Adnan’s lawyer will probably call an alibi witness that was not used during his original trial. Asia McClain, one of his high school classmates, says she saw Adnan in the library at the time the prosecution claimed that Lee was murdered.
She told The Baltimore Sun last year, ‘All this time I thought the courts proved it was Adnan that killed her’, and also maintained that she has never doubted the time and date she saw him.
Mobile phone reception data, which was used to convict Adnan and placed him at the scene of the crime, is also expected to be put under the spotlight.
Adnan Syed’s post-conviction hearing is taking place RIGHT NOW. And we’ll be waiting to hear the outcome…
