How to deal with interview nerves

Interview nerves are part of the job-application experience. They drive us to bring our A-game but can also set us back if we can’t learn to control them. Shaky knees and a dry mouth are to be expected. If you’ve been on the job-hunt part for a while, the interview is often thought of as the final hurdle. It’d be a colossal mistake to choke now.

Be it over Skype or in person, you have every right to be nervous. And it’s not such a bad thing. Youtube career advisors, The Interview Guys, have created a really handy video for helping everyone get over their interview nerves.

To pull out some overused aphorisms: there’s nothing to fear but fear itself. The Interview Guys rationalise the fears of the common interviewee which makes the whole process a lot easier.

Here is what we learned, watch the video above for more information regarding interview technique.

  • “We all fear what we don’t know, and this is a huge cause of our anxiety. So if there is anything about the interview you are unsure about, find out! Find out the name of the person who will be interviewing you by calling the company. While you’re at it, ask about what the dress code is if you are unsure.”
  • “Visualise the entire process as a normal conversation between two colleagues trying to get to know each other. A conversation is much less stressful than an interview. Take some time to practice with a friend or colleague to perfect your delivery.”
  • “Make sure that you have really taken the time to plan, prepare and rehearse. The less prepared you are, the more anxiety you are going to feel. Spend some time researching the company and more importantly, preparing answers to the interview questions you believe are going to be asked.”
