5 ways to develop leadership skills

If you have aspirations of becoming a CEO one day, or maybe starting your own company, you’re going to need some killer leadership skills.

Maybe you have them already, but if not, it’s never too late to start. It’s worth developing leadership skills for any job, because you never know when you’ll be asked to take charge of the interns or promoted to project manager in the near future, right?

Here are five ways to be an inspiring leader.

1. Take on more responsibility

Show your boss that you’re serious about being an integral part of the team by asking for more responsibility. Or take the initiative and pitch some ideas of your own. More responsibility also means making more important decisions, so be accountable for the outcome of those decisions no matter what.

2. Learn from constructive criticism

Ask your colleagues for feedback and learn from your mistakes. Being humble and listening to what other people have to say could provide you with some great new ideas and ways to make things even better.

3. Start thinking of solutions rather than problems

When things go wrong or you’ve made a mistake, practise reframing your thoughts into what you can do to solve the problem rather than focusing on the fact that something isn’t going well. Staying positive and using your creativity to fix the problem will set the right tone for everyone else.

4. Take a risk

The best leaders push the envelope with their dreams, so don’t be afraid to take a risk, even if you fail. As long as you believe in what you’re doing, your failures will only lead you to new and better ideas and opportunities.

5. Be generous

Avoid going on a power trip and be generous with your praise. Take the time to listen to others, and to encourage them. Give people credit for good ideas and be forgiving when they mess up. Learn to delegate tasks and offer them constructive feedback.
