5 signs you’ve chosen the right career

You’ve landed your ‘dream job’, so why doesn’t it feel as dreamy as you’d imagined? It’s time to stop doubting your decisions and find out whether you’re on the right track.

If at least three of the below apply to you, you’re doing well.

1. You love the question, “So, what do you do?”

You can feel a smile emerging as soon as someone utters these simple words. You know your answer should be short and sweet but you could quite literally go on for hours, explaining with animation and enthusiasm each and every aspect of your job. For you, your job isn’t just what you do, it’s part of who you are and it’s important to you that people know that.

2. You don’t sit at your desk daydreaming about a new life on the beach

People who dislike their job don’t just dream of finding a new one, they fantasise about life without work whatsoever. You, on the other hand, have discovered how rewarding and fulfilling a job can be, and you’re hungry for more. You enjoy the responsibility you’ve earned and would prefer to keep ‘beach life’ neatly filed under ‘annual leave’.

3. You have accepted that not every day will be amazing

When one day isn’t so great, you’re not immediately plotting your escape. You realise that there is no such thing as a perfect job and that sometimes you’ll have to do tasks you wouldn’t choose to. As long as you are content, inspired and motivated most of the time, you should count yourself lucky.

4. You’re not constantly planning your next snack break

They say time flies when you’re having fun, and it’s true. Calculating the appropriate time intervals between your packet of dried fruit and skinny cappuccino is a clear sign of boredom, and that you’re in the wrong place. Yes, snacks are important and exciting, but if every day starts to revolve around them, get out.

5. You can see that career ladder and want to start climbing

There is nothing worse than being stuck in an entry-level job with no clear path to follow. A career is all about progression and it’s important that you have something to aspire to and work towards. You might be making the tea and handing out the post today, but as long as you can see that shiny golden path to success, you’re in the right place and have chosen the right career.
