5 career lessons we’ve learnt from the Met Gala

We’ve been fan-girling ALL over the looks from the Met Gala. Gigi, Taylor, Bey – we want to do some serious shopping after seeing their outfits!

But we’ve also been taking a minute to look a little deeper. Here we’re discussing the career advice we’ve taken away from the biggest fashion event of the year.

1. Come back fighting

Beyoncé has had a tough time recently. The affair, which we’ve all been obsessing over thanks to her new album Lemonade, isn’t something you just get over. We’re so impressed with how she’s used a horrible drama in her personal life and funnelled it into her music. Now it’s actually boosting her career. So when Bey stepped out at last night’s Met Gala she made sure all eyes were on her and we learnt that putting your best foot forward, even after a heartbreak, is always the best thing to do.

2. Represent your industry

Kendall was at The White House last week where Obama said he didn’t really know what she did. He said of Kim Kardashian’s sister: “She seems like a very nice young woman…I’m not exactly sure what she does. But I am told that my Twitter mentions are about to go through the roof!” Wow, what a diss. But Kendall fought back. She came out at the Met Gala and showed him EXACTLY what she does – she’s one of the most powerful and commanding supermodels of our generation! And she event stood next to Cindy Crawford to prove it.

We’ve learnt from this that you need to represent your industry and show those who criticise your work just how good you really are. Don’t shy away from questioning – prove yourself!

3. Don’t be afraid of change

Whether you’re taking a break from your daily grind (music and touring in Taylor Swift’s case) or are thinking of changing industries, don’t be afraid of changing things up. Taylor rocked a totally new look at the Met Gala last night and showed us all that doing things differently isn’t as hard as you might think.

4. Your family are a support network you should utilise

Think you’re too independent and mature to need your family babying you anymore? Us too, but your family are actually a great asset to you and your career.  Kylie Jenner showed that when she attended her first Met Gala last night alongside her supportive sisters Kendall and Kim. Taking her under their fashionable wings, Kylie is now firmly in the Vogue-elite club, receiving Anna Wintour’s golden (ticket) invite to the event. It’s super exciting for Kylie and we bet we can see some exciting new projects in the works for her off the back of this!

5. Been praised at work? RUN WITH IT

James Corden is doing very well for himself over in America. He has received huge acclaim from various big names, the biggest being Anna Wintour. Did you know that he’s actually Anna’s favourite comedian? Yep, that’s some serious praise (and can you imagine Anna actually laughing at her TV? We can’t!) and James is running with it. The Met Gala may not be somewhere we’d expect to see our Gavin and Stacey fave, but he’s showing us all that when you get your change you need to go for it, no matter how out of your comfort zone it might seem!
