House hunting? Here are 6 things you need to know

Gone are the days of having to search through crumpled newspapers for the latest listings of houses and flats to rent or buy. Nowadays, it’s more a case of downloading an app or getting online.

Here’s our definitive digital guide to house hunting in 2015.

1. It’s all about online

Modern house hunting is a cut-throat business. You need to virtually live online in order to get the best houses in the quickest time. Set up email alerts to your inbox, weekly, daily – even hourly! These alerts can be filtered to your specific requirements, so choose these first so you are on the ball from the go. We recommend Zoopla, Rightmove, PrimeLocation and OnTheMarket. All four websites also have handy apps, so you have no excuse to be house hunting 24/7.

2. Need a roomie?

The best place to find new housemates is SpareRoom – the site is easy to use, and you can search by location, rent budget, age range and even whether or not they smoke! This is a go-to part of cyberspace if you need a house, or already have a house and need a room filled.

Another option is to ask around friends via Facebook and Twitter – there always seems to be someone looking. Just make sure you guys all meet up before you decide to take the plunge – you want to make sure you all get on like a house on fire (excuse the pun…).

3. What’s the deal?

Try and work out an area that you are all happy to live in – it may be that you need to widen your search slightly depending on pricing and so on. It’s best to look into commuting links, amenities and other stuff around that particular location to ensure you have everything you need before moving in.

Use CommuteFrom to work out your route to work.

AroundMe is a super handy app which allows you to quickly find information about your current location.

Fitness fan? Gov.Uk have set up a site so you can check out your closest green space.

4. Be flexible

It sometimes feels like the whole world is house hunting at the same time – you set up an appointment to view a house, and by the time you arrive, it already has been taken off the market. If you are moving in with friends, try and work out a schedule so that one of you is always available at some point in the day to view houses. If you can – set up a little rota and group Whatsapp to ensure you can all communicate as quickly as possible.

5. Hooray! you have a house

Once you finally pop down that all important deposit, you can start thinking about leaving your old pad. House Move Pro is a great app which tries to take the stress out of the run-up to moving day. It has a complete planner and checklists already set up which you can use to battle with your to-do list.

6. It’s moving day!

Here are some handy apps to download onto your phone to make moving day a breeze.

Putting shelves up? Use this Spirit Level tool for pain-free DIY!

Dulux have devised a Visualizer app, allowing you to see your room in any colour in REAL TIME!
