- Can’t handle stress? That could show that you’re super creative
- Creatives don’t only care about crushing the competition. Do you?
- Randomness is actually the key to creative success. Who knew?!
Job descriptions always ask for “creative” and “dynamic” people don’t they? Are you worried that you’re not one of those people? Well read this and feel a whole lot more self-assured.
I didn’t think I was particularly creative until I started writing this article!
1. You don’t always care about winning
Dan Pallotta said in his article “What’s the Point of Creativity” in the Harvard Business Review that while we all want to win in life, the “best creativity comes from a much deeper place than the desire to win. It comes from a desire to contribute to the lives of others.” Creative people see the bigger picture and aren’t just interested in beating the competition.
2. You can’t handle stress
The Yerkes-Dodson Law (yep, we’re getting scientific!) shows us that staying at the height of your stress lowers productivity because being addicted to stress counteracts creativity. Chronic stress actually completely inhibits creativity.
3. You don’t like authority
Well do many people? But creatives like to do their own thing rather than being dictated to. If you’ve got a boss from hell you’re going to need our top tips for managing them.
4. You like change
Creative people are always looking for new things to do and new ways to push boundaries. Getting out there and doing things – does this sound like you? It’s a great one for knowing if you are a truly creative person.
5. You like randomness
Steven Johnson, the author of Where Good Ideas Come From, said that “creativity happens when seemingly unrelated existing ideas collide to form new ideas.” So that’s the secret to being creative and successful then…being random!
If you’re none of the above don’t worry. Creativity can be learned. Fact!
