Crazy hours, jetlag and the totally understandable temptation to gorge yourself on rich, fatty foods make it almost too easy to derail your normal fitness routine when you travel.
Trips are meant to be an escape from real life, but follow these tips and you’ll thank us when you get back home.
1. Eat well
Seems obvious enough, but it’s only natural to want to splurge on a couple of fancy meals. Just make sure to balance them out with lighter, healthier dishes. Go to the nearest farmer’s market and grab some fresh produce, and make sure to try any local delicacies along the way!
2. Stick to your normal fitness routine (as much as you can)
Take a yoga class. Or a spinning class. Or do a free trial at a local gym (without making it too obvious that you’re a tourist). Take the time to do whatever you would normally do at home so you don’t get off track.
Alternatively, do something adventurous that’s unique to wherever you are. Go on a hike or learn how to surf – exercise can be a great way to learn about the local culture.
3. Go sightrunning
Running along the coastline or in the city centre can be a great way to stave off calories while seeing the sights at the same time. You’ll learn your way around and get to see things you maybe would have otherwise missed. If you’re more of a cyclist, rent a bike and do the same.
Taking the time to relax and re-energise is just as important as getting exercise. Indulge in a massage or a pedicure after a nice long hike or swim. You deserve it!
