We spoke to a Face Yoga expert about the future of yoga and training for beginners

Danielle Collins the world’s leading authority on Face Yoga. As well frequenting television programmes spreading the gospel truth about taking care of your faces, Collins has developed a range of wildly successful DVDs and apps promoting healthy living starting from the the top of the head to the bottom of your chin.

List For Life caught up with the Face Yoga forerunner to discuss how to train to become an instructor, what the philosophy behind Face Yoga is and what Collins would do different if she could rewind time.

1. For those who don’t know, what exactly is Face Yoga and what’s the philosophy behind it?

Face Yoga is a natural, holistic way of looking and feeling younger and healthier. It is a combination of exercises for the face, face massage, acupressure, relaxation and wellbeing. The benefits include toning and lifting muscles to smooth the skin, boosting circulation, collagen and elastin and releasing and relaxing tension. Essentially it is a natural facelift and combines new techniques with techniques which have been used for thousands of years in Eastern medicine. I am a true believer that we should all have the opportunity to look and feel the very best version of ourselves using easy, effective and natural methods. Since I have created The Danielle Collins Face Yoga Method, it has been enjoyed by people all over the globe and I feel blessed every day when I see how people are looking and feeling amazing from using it. I also feel that we all know about the benefits of exercising and relaxing the body but we often stop at the neck but we should remember that these 57 muscles above the collar bone need care too.

2. How did you first get into the wellness industry?

My journey started shortly after leaving university (and training to be a school teacher) when I was diagnosed with M.E. Doctors told me there wasn’t anything I could do about this illness and some people live with it forever. Although I was bed ridden and house bound much of the time, I was determined to overcome the illness and started introducing some simple Yoga, positive thinking, relaxation and nutrition to my life. Within 2 years I was fully recovered from the illness and felt such a strong desire to help others to either overcome illness or just to feel healthier and happier. I then trained as a Yoga teacher, Relaxation Therapist and Nutritionist. The last decade has been amazing and I am not only incredibly lucky to be living and sharing my passion but to also have helped so many people in the way I set out to.

3. Do you think that yoga is beneficial for everyone, or do you need a certain mindset to reap the benefits of it?

Yoga is definitely for everyone. When I first started Yoga I was someone who was highly stressed, unhealthy and living with a debilitating illness and had never heard of Yoga prior to my first session! But I did what I could manage and it literally changed my life! I have taught Face Yoga and Yoga to every age and every wellness level. Face Yoga in particular is so accessible for everyone as you can do it sitting down and you just work on your face and relaxing.

4. What advice would you give to a young person looking to train to become an instructor?

I train people to become teachers of The Danielle Collins Face Yoga Method and the 200 instructors we have come from a variety of backgrounds. Some from years in the beauty or Yoga industry but some with no prior knowledge. The advance I always give is be true to yourself, be authentic in all you do, be clear of your goals and speak to as many people as possible as word of mouth is the best advertising.

5. Where do think your yoga business will be heading in the next few years? Will apps become a thing of the past and what platforms are you looking to expand into?

I aim to keep helping and inspiring as many people as possible. I love the work I do on TV as this allows me to reach lots of people and share the message on natural, holistic health. I think Apps are here to stay at the moment. The feedback I get from people who use my Face Yoga, Body Yoga and Wellbeing Yoga Apps (search ‘Danielle Collins’ on your App store) are that they find the fact that all the Apps are in 10 minute sections and they can easily access them on their phone or tablet, anytime, anywhere, means exercising the face, body and mind is easy to fit in to a busy life. Many people also love my DVDs as they can simply exercise and relax in the comfort of their own home. I think there is a massive trend towards people enjoying accessing health and fitness on a range of media from home in order to aid convenience and therefore help motivation.

6. And finally, if you could, what advice would you give to yourself 10 years ago?

Use organic skincare! Over the last 5 years, and particularly since I launched the first product in my Fusion by Danielle Collins skincare range which is Soil Association certified organic, I have learnt so much about the importance of natural products for the skin. It is amazing how our skin reacts so much better when natural ingredients are used as they are much more readily accepted by the skin and this prevents breakouts, ageing and inflammation. Also, so much of what we apply to our skin is absorbed in to our body so it is so important to be mindful of what we apply.
