Zayn Malik debuted new single It’s You earlier this week, and marked his second album release with a soulful performance on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon.
But have you really listened to the lyrics? Because, erm, they’re kind of provocative.
The 23-year-old singer has always admitted that he wrote the song about a ‘break-up’, telling Apple Music’s Beats 1 last year: ‘There’s a song on the record called It’s You, which is to me I can tell a real centre-piece for the album. Vocally certainly.
‘It’s about the break-up of your relationship, clearly.’
Obviously, the whispers are that the song is about ex-fiancee Perrie Edwards, whom Zayn broke things off with last July. And now that the song’s out, the lyrics are causing a stir…
‘She got her own reason for talking to me. She don’t give a f*** about what I need’, the song goes. ‘Tell me your lies because I just can’t face it’.
‘Could it be that it’s a lesson that I never had to learn? I looked at it like a blessing and now it’s just a curse.’
And Malik may have subtly responded to the allegations that he’s laid into his ex in the song, with his latest cryptic tweets.
‘I’m not tryna be no rapper, my album is me a child… My ideas have been with me a long time’, he wrote last night.
‘Use your brain, appreciate art don’t discriminate what you don’t understand.’
Hmm. Well, as Taylor Swift knows, you’re always going to ruffle a few ex’s feathers with your lyrics… All in the name of art, eh?
