Remember that time when Antonio Banderas announced that he would be enrolling in legendary fashion school, Central Saint Martins? No? Well, we like to take time out of our busy lives to remember this nugget once in a while, so happy does it make us. In fact, the actor is there right now (we’re assuming) following in the footsteps of the likes of Alexander McQueen and Christopher Kane. He even debuted his own collection for menswear brand Selected Homme earlier this year.
Now though, Banderas has found the perfect way of combining his passion for fashion with his actual career as an actor. It has been announced that he will play the late Gianni Versace in an upcoming biopic. Rumours about the film surfaced last year, but it is now thought that filming will begin later this year in Milan.
Although not much is known about the project at the moment, Danish filmmaker Billie August will direct the English-language film, which will focus on the designer’s rise to fame in the 1970s. It will end with Versace’s murder in 1997, which occurred at his Miami mansion.
The biopic is, however, unauthorised, with the Italian fashion house telling WWD that it “has neither authorized nor had any involvement whatsoever in the forthcoming movie about Versace. The movie should only be seen as a work of fiction.” Last Friday, 15th July marked the 19 year anniversary of Gianni’s death, as marked by his sister Donatella on Instagram.
A fashion student who’s set to play Gianni Versace in a Hollywood biopic? Antonio Banderas is not your average CSM pupil.
