No doubt about it. Transgenderism is the topic hot on everyone lips these days.
Ever since Caitlyn Jenner made the brave decision to finally embrace her true self, being transgender has become a worldwide talking point, with celebrities and support groups rallying around to raise awareness about the issues and prejudices transgender people face every day. And now it seems that the modelling world is also keen to follow suit, with the very first all-transgender modelling agency opening in Los Angeles this summer.
Thai agency Apple Model Management already made history last year by becoming the first business to accomodate transgender men and women models, but now they have their sights firmly set on the American market with their very first branch outside Thailand set to open in LA. This expansion is yet another positive example of how transgenderism is becoming recognised and accepted on a global scale, and rightly so.
With transgender models Andreja Pejic and Lea T in increasingly high demand and OITNB actress/model Ruby Rose talking openly about gender fluidity, it’s clear that the fashion world needs an agency like Apple. Cecilio Asuncion, who recently released documentary What’s the T about transgender women, has been appointed to manage the fledgeling branch and already has six models on his books.
‘Our strong commitment to developing them as successful models is never about quantifying or qualifying their gender,’ says Asuncion.
‘It’s never a question of if they are women or men, it’s about their passion and commitment to being the best possible models they can be.’
The agency is always on the look out for new talent, and hopefuls can apply via the company’s website.
