From flares to embroidered dresses, we love Topshop's cool retro denim collection

The Ultimate High Street Denim Round-Up

The blue stuff is seriously in style this season, but we’re not talking basic skinnies. From slick bomber jackets and chic midi skirts to vintage inspired styles and new must-haves, we’ve rounded up the hottest new ranges and shapes hitting the high street this week…

Topshop’s Retro Cool

In case you hadn’t noticed, it’s all about taking inspiration from the past this spring, with the 60s and 70s leading the way. Topshop’s new denim drop channels both decades to perfection, with indigo flares, suede trimmed jackets and embroidered smock dresses. And, as you can see by the super cool model shots, more is more, whether you try a triple (yes, triple) blue combo or layer dresses over shirts. The only rule? Colours must be contrasting. Add fringed accessories and suede separates to up the vintage vibe even more.

Gap’s Grown-Up Blues

Thought denim was strictly for off-duty? Think again. Go-to destination Gap has given the humble fabric a glossy spin for the new season in the form of chic peplum tops and prim midi skirts. Thanks to clean lines and rich shades, the pieces will slot seamlessly into your office and after-dark wardrobes. Team the indigo tee with bright tailored trousers and pointed flats, and rock the collarless bomber with a crisp white shirt for a whole new take on the smart/casual trend. Oh, and don’t forget to belt tops for work to add structure, then go without for a boxier shape on weekends.

Shape Update! Meet Spring’s Cult Denim Styles

The Culottes

The cropped, wide legged shape is going nowhere, and denim is the perfect update on last season’s leather. Head to Warehouse for this amazing £40 pair, or Zara and Topshop to nail the trend. Wear with streamlined or cropped tops to balance out the voluminous shape.

The Mixi Skirt

We’re talking about the new length that’s not quite a maxi but longer than a midi, which was a hit on the Paul & Joe SS15 catwalk. If you fancy a splurge, you can shop theirs for £200, but we’ll be snapping up Zara’s £29.99 number. This shape is great with shirts – try classic white for work then darker denim for a more laidback feel, then finish off with chunky tan heels.

The Boxy Jacket

The classic denim cover-up has been re-worked for 2015 with a modern, boxy fit, and Marks & Spencer are nailing it with this £75 offering. Our tip? Look for big patch pockets on the front to nod to the utility trend too, and contrast the shape with full frocks and skirt or billowing palazzo pants.
