Oh, Emma Watson. Where do we even begin?
Aside from never really putting a foot wrong in the style stakes, there’s just so many reasons to love Ms Watson.
Yesterday was International Women’s Day, and ladies everywhere were taking to social media to show unity and support. With the hashtag trending worldwide, it was a thing to behold.
Celebrities such as Blake Lively, Jessie J and Cameron Diaz all took part, promoting the movement of #InternationalWomensDay across the ‘net.
But none were so vocal as HeForShe campaigner, Emma Watson.
Fast becoming the face of new age feminism, this independent lady has made waves encouraging both men and women to take part in the feminist movement. She was named UN Women Goodwill Ambassador in 2014, and her speech at the UN created an internet storm.
In a Q&A that was filmed and live steamed on Facebook on Sunday, the star created a very public forum to make her feelings clear about the movement.
Emma observed, “Gender equality, historically has been predominantly a women’s movement for women. But I think the impact of gender inequality and how it’s affecting men hasn’t really been addressed.”
The Harry Potter actress went on to explain that feminism needs to be redefined, in order for everyone to feel included and get involved, “People associate feminism with hate – with man hate – and that’s really negative. I don’t think that’s what feminism is about at all – it’s really positive. I think that’s why women became reluctant to use the word.”
After she spoke out about her campaign ideals, Emma was met with trolling and threats. She opened up about the ordeal: “The minute I stepped up and talked about women’s rights I was immediately threatened,” she is of course talking about the threat of exposing non-existent indecent pictures of her. “Within less than 12 hours I was receiving threats.”
She went on, “People think, ‘Oh she’s gonna be disheartened by this,’ but if anything, it made me so much more determined. I was just raging. It made me so angry, that I was like, ‘This, this is why I have to be doing this’.”
Go on, Em.
The leading lady also opened up about a date that she once paid for, “It was making him a bit tetchy. But the cool thing about it was we were both willing to have the conversation about why it was awkward and why it was uncomfortable. We were able to have the dialogue.”
