One of the world’s most legendary designers, Oscar de la Renta, has died at the age of 82.
With more than 50 years at the helm of his namesake label, la Renta had dressed some of the most famous A-listers of all time – as well recently designing Amal Clooney’s lace wedding gown last month, he also became the go-to designer for the White House’s First Lady’s, an Oscars favourite and was famously Sarah Jessica Parker‘s number one label.
‘George and I wanted a wedding that was romantic and elegant, and I can’t imagine anyone more able than Oscar to capture this mood in a dress’, Clooney’s new wife told Vogue last month. ‘Meeting him made the design process all the more magical, as he is so warm and such a gentleman.’
We’ll remember the fashion legend mainly for his gorgeously elegant red carpet creations, and for that Sex And The City episode which was dedicated wholly to the designer.
While dating the Russian, Carrie Bradshaw spent the entire tribute episode decked out in nothing but La Renta’s finest, ending in a beautiful pink Oscar de la Renta gown for the ballet. Love.
His wife Annette confirmed he passed away at his home in Connecticut on Monday. The cause of his death is yet to be revealed, but he was diagnosed with cancer in 2006.
In a statement released by his label, it read: ‘While our hearts are broken by the idea of life without Oscar, he is still very much us. Oscar’s hard work, his intelligence and his love of life are at the heart of our company.
‘All that we have done, and all that we will do, is informed by his values and his spirit. Through Oscar’s example we know the way forward. We will make Oscar very proud of us by continuing in an even stronger way the work that Oscar loved so much.’
