Selena Gomez has just slammed selfies in a major way.
The 23-year-old singer is on the cover of Wonderland’s latest issue, and as well as discussing her break-up with Justin Bieber, the star also criticises the celebrity addiction to papping themselves.
‘The problem is that people are looking at all these pages and then they are thinking less of themselves’, Selena said.
We do agree that staring at the Kardashians’ gorgeous flawless, app-altered faces every day is enough to make anyone feel insecure, but on the flipside – we all do it. And we hate to point it out, but Selena’s Insta-account is full of selfies just like the rest of us!
The outspoken star has also opened up about why she got naked on her new album cover. And we’re totally with her.
In case you missed it, the singer has also posed nude on the cover of Revival, looking incredible with stripped-back make-up and tumbling, natural locks. And her decision to bare all was an important one.
‘You have to understand that I dealt with a lot of body-shaming this year and I’ve never experienced that before,’ she told The Cruz Show. ‘I don’t care about that stuff, but I did start gaining weight, and I didn’t really mind it.’
But it was the cruel comments left on her Instagram photos that led Selena to start guessing herself. ‘Man, that hurt’, she said. ‘That was really hurtful.’
In retaliation, Gomez decided to embrace her body by getting naked, and looking seriously stunning in the process. ‘It’s not even about my weight,’ she explained about her cover. ‘I’m not going to let them get to me.’
‘It’s beautiful’, she continued. ‘It represents that it’s bare. I don’t want diamonds and things all over me for the cover, and really thick make-up. I wanted it natural, so… Geez!’
The singer also recently opened up about how she’s taught herself to feel way less self conscious about her bod. And how she’s going to continue tucking into her In-N-Outs whenever she damn feels like it.
‘The only thing I have to do is be happy with myself – and I am’, she told Bravo. ‘I want to be able to eat a burger without someone having their say about my figure.’ Oh, amen to that.
Selena continued to say that she’s totally realistic about the way her body (which, incidentally, is banging) looks, and has zero desire to change it.
‘I’m not particularly dainty by nature and don’t plan to starve myself to change that’, she added. ‘Girls should accept themselves the way they are. And others need to be more accepting of us too – we deserve more respect!’ Woop! We hear you, Selena.
Earlier this year, Gomez jetted off to the exotic shores of Mexico for a bit of down time with her pals, and she was busy on Instagram documenting her epic bikini collection while she was at it.
Working a hot pink Mint Swim matching set on the beach and posing up a storm for a sexy pool shoot in the brand’s classic Fiona one-piece, Selena was looking like a total sex pot and we were totally feeling her sultry vaycay sass. Miaow.
But being a super hot, body confident lady in the limelight, Selena soon came under scrutiny on Twitter for her new ‘curves.’ So how did she respond? Well, in the most badass way, obv.
Posting a out-of-this-world swimwear shot of her working a sexy panelled Mint Swim one-piece on her sun lounger, Selena wrote: ‘I love being happy with me yall #theresmoretolove’, along with a crying laughter emoji.
It’s about time we started celebrating our bods for the gorgeous vessels they are.
Chrissy Teigen recently made us feel empowered about out ‘stretchies’, and now Selena is one of our favourite new body confidence idols.
Keep up the good work, ladies.
