It’s hardly headline news that top actresses get paid a lot. Obviously it doesn’t compare to that of their male counterparts (don’t even get us started on that injustice) but our minds never fail to boggle when we’re presented with the hard facts and figures of their respective salaries, with a revelation surrounding one lady’s earnings having just made the history books.
Scarlett Johansson is officially been named the highest-grossing actress in history, having amassed a box-office revenue of £2.4 BILLION over the course of her career. Talk about #girlboss cred.
Disconcertingly the figures – which have been compiled by Box Office Mojo – show Scarlett to be the only female star in the top ten, coming in 10th place. Hmph. However, she is the youngest star to make the cut.
So far, she has made 37 films in her career, including her major box-office successes The Girl With The Pearl Earring, Lost In Translation and, most recently, The Jungle Book. And all at the age of 31. Sigh.
Of course, her part as Black Widow in the Avengers franchise has helped her pip her peers to the post.
So it’s applause all-round for Scar-Jo but the fact that, out of the top 50 earners in the acting biz, that only NINE of them are female, is a worrying stat to say the least. Behind Scarlett in 19th place is Cameron Diaz followed by Helena Bonham Carter in 26th, Cate Blanchett in 29th, Julia Roberts in 30th, Elizabeth Banks in 31st, Emma Watson in 32nd, Sandra Bullock in 47th and, bringing up the rear, Anne Hathaway in 50th place.
Yep, we’ve got a LONG way to go…
