Meet Ruth Negga, the London-based actress currently storming Hollywood- and for good reason. From her critically acclaimed performances to her impeccable dress sense, there are so many reasons to love her. Prepare to fall head over heels...
Every year during the chaos that is awards season, there seems to be a breakout star poised and ready to conquer Hollywood. Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Stone and Brie Larson have previously experienced such a phenomenon and, for 2017, it’s Ruth Negga who is dominating headlines.
The Ethiopian-Irish actress has been working hard for many years but, thanks to roles in last year’s Warcraft and Loving, out in May this year, Negga is well on her way to becoming a household name. She was nominated for a Golden Globe and is one of the contenders for BAFTA’s Rising Star Award. She’s also American Vogue’s cover star for January 2017. All in all, this could just be Ruth Negga’s year.
Born in Addis Ababa in 1982, Negga and her mother fled to Ireland to escape political violence when she was just four. Her father remained in the country but sadly died in a car accident just a few years later. Speaking to American Vogue, she said that these events have since made her realise that her decision to be an actor “was no coincidence. I think it makes me able to access certain things that are quite near to the surface, an honesty or something about life that I wouldn’t have had otherwise.”
Negga has been a prominent force in British theatre for some time now. She was the first black woman to play Ophelia at the National Theatre seven years ago and, since then, she has appeared on screen in Fury, World War Z and 12 Years A Slave as well as landing a role as Tulip O’Hare in AMC’s television series, Preacher. In the series, she stars alongside her boyfriend of almost eight years, Dominic Cooper.
Alongside Joel Edgerton in Loving, Negga plays Mildred, one half of a biracial couple arrested simply for being married. The film has already received incredible reviews and, as previously mentioned, Negga has been nominated for BAFTA’s prestigious Rising Star Award.
As well as being a chronic over-achiever, Ruth Negga also happens to be brilliant at getting dressed. Not only does she happen to be Look’s Best Dressed of the Week (a highly coveted title, as it happens) she also received praise from, well, pretty much everyone thanks to a slew of perfect outfits on- and off- the red carpet.
Working with super styling Karla Welch, Negga favours designers such as Valentino, Dolce and Gabbana, Erdem, Rodarte, Prada, Marc Jacobs and, as seen on the red carpet at the Golden Globes, Louis Vuitton.
Welch said of the glittering, silver gown: “It’s a custom piece made in the very special atelier in Paris. Nicolas Ghesquiere designed the dress for her.” Speaking to The Telegraph, she added, “It’s a combination of rose gold, yellow gold and silver paillettes- they were all sewn by hand and it took 120 hours to make.”
Given that such high profile, powerful designers are lining up to dress her, it’s clear that Negga is a style icon in the making. We just can’t wait to see what she does next.
