Rihanna’s Fave Designer Hits The High Street

Remember that dress Rihanna wore to the 2014 Council of Fashion Designers awards made almost entirely of crystals? Well, that was the handiwork of Adam Selman, the New York-based designer currently taking the celeb world by storm.

And now, he’s created a brand new collection of sunglasses for Le Specs; the luxe sunglasses label that’s already a favourite of Cara Delevingne, Kate Moss and Queen Bey. His loyal gang of famous fans – including Lady Gaga and Rihanna -are already rocking their Selman sunnies, which come in a range of graphic cat-eye shapes and bold colours, and are all just £69.
We caught up with the designer to talk iconic specs, dressing Beyonce and what he really thinks about Rihanna…

We love your Le Specs collection- can you tell us a bit about how it happened, and what made you want to turn your hand to eyewear?

Thank you!!! I love them too! Eyewear is something I’ve always been interested in. It really helps complete a look, once you put a pair of sunglasses on and can totally change an entire outfit. When I met the LeSpecs team, it was through friends and it just felt right, not forced, which was very important to me. The entire LeSpecs team really believed in the vision and helped me bring it to life.

What was your biggest inspiration when you were designing the collection?

I really studied a lot of eyewear and references. In the end I knew I wanted something bold, but relatable. I focused on wanting to pay homage to two major sunglass moments in film history – The Hunger and Lolita. The ending result came out super modern and fresh I think.

What kind of woman do you want to see wearing your glasses?

No one in particular. Sure, it’s fun to see celebrities, models, stylists and photo shoots using the glasses, but at the end of the day, what would really make me happy is seeing a random lady on the street, at the beach, out at night – laughing, dancing, wearing the glasses having a great time. It brings fashion to life and that’s what I’m interested in at the moment.

You’re pretty active on Instagram – how important is social media to a designer’s success these days?

Yeah, I really like Instagram. You can say a lot with just one picture. I don’t think you can build a career on Instagram, but it certainly helps get my message out there and it’s a fun way to see girls wearing my clothes.’

What’s your favourite thing to do when you’re not designing?

Get inspiration to design the next collection.

What makes Rihanna a style icon, do you think?

Her confidence.

What is it that you love most about her?

Her loyalty.

How hands-on is Rihanna when you’re designing something for her to wear?

Very, she knows what she’s doing and is very skilled in her design choices.

If you could dress one other celebrity, who would it be?

I am actually fortunate enough to recently make pieces for Lorde, Beyonce,  and Ariana Grande. But as amazing as celebrities are I am really focused on my collection and how I move forward with that. Getting “real” girls, my peers, into my clothes. It’s a new adventure that’s fun, difficult and exciting, it’s good to try new things.’

What are you currently obsessed with?

I’m really obsessed with skincare at the moment, hydrating from within, house plants and the podcast Serial.

What songs do you play to inspire you when you’re designing?

Today I listened to the soundtrack from “Midnight Express”

How would you describe your own style? Does it influence your designs at all?

I’m very “wash and wear” I like a uniform that I rotate all the time. I steal all my clothes from friends’ closets, or they’re hand-me-downs. I prefer dressing others, rather than myself. But it definitely plays into how I design and build a collection. I remake my pants, my favorite overalls, my favorite sweatshirt, and twist them into a feminine idea for a lady’s wardrobe.

Can you tell us a secret that nobody knows about you?

Hmm. Last night I ate ice cream, peanut brittle, 5 cookies, and a brownie. And I don’t feel bad about it.

Why should we be rocking Adam Selman x Le Specs this summer?

They’re super cool. They’re bold, unique and they were made to have fun in. Summer is, after all, all about fun.

Finally, if you weren’t a designer, what would you be doing?

Building furniture, maybe dabbling in sculpture. Probably coaching competitive cheerleading to pay the bills.
