When Rihanna stepped out in a retro bucket hat recently, we never imagined we’d be coveting a floppy head-topper come summer. But the hat made famous by the likes of LL Cool J and a host of ’90s stars is back in a big way, even going so far as to make an appearance on the catwalks of Anteprima and Christian Wijnants.
Ri-Ri gets her hat fix from BFF Melissa Forde, who has just teamed up with rapper Wale and his hat label Wrking Title to design her very own range of bucket beauties.
From pineapple prints to rainbow brights, M$$ (the nickname given to Melissa by Ri) has created standout designs that her bestie has been wearing on a near daily basis. And if the launch party at the end of March was anything to go by – check Melissa’s Instagram – it appears that everyone is very excited about the collaboration.
Already a talented photographer and uber cool street-style mistress, Melissa was quick to offer some inside tips on the best way to rock a bucket:
‘The best way to style the hats is to do the complete opposite and stay away from being too styled. The hats are pretty colorful and stylish on their own, so I wouldn’t try to find one specific outfit for the hats; wear them with everything!’
Drawing influence from her Caribbean upbringing and Wale’s African heritage, Melissa’s hats are the utlimate head candy. Sadly, they’re only stocked at Opening Ceremony in the US at the moment, but the good old high street is already on the case. From reversible styles to pretty floral prints and denim designs, you’ve just met your new-season hero accessory.
