Raf Simons is stepping down as creative director of Christian Dior for “personal reasons”. The designer has held the position for three years and, as was stated in the announcement from Dior’s CEO, has made an “exceptional contribution to the house”. Presumably with a heavy heart, Raf will move on to concentrate on other things including his namesake line and “passions” aside from work. In a statement released, the Belgian designer said:
“Christian Dior is an extraordinary company, and it has been an immense privilege to be allowed to write a few pages of this magnificent book.”
In the three years with Raf at the helm, as well as couture and catwalk moments that have gone down in history, Raf created some of the most memorable red carpet moments we will ever have. Here are some of our faves.
1. Jennifer Lawrence’s Oscar Gown
No one will forget the moment J Law fell up the stairs when going to collect her Oscar for Best actress, but equally, no one will forget the unbelievably gorgeous gown she was wearing. Jen has worn her fair share of Dior frocks, but this one outshines them all.
2. Amal’s White Gloves
When the human rights lawyer turned up to her first award show, she more than held her own against the Hollywood heavyweights. With a little help from Dior, Amal’s long white gloves landed her on every best dressed list going and helped her prove her fashion worth.
3. Rihanna’s FROWstopper
Not technically a red carpet, but undoubtedly one of the most iconic moments in Dior’s recent history so we just had to include it. When RiRi showed up to Christian Dior’s autumn/winter 2014 show in this raunchy ensemble, she created one of those outstanding style moments.
4. Emma Watson’s Backless Frock
From the front it seemed as if Ms Watson was wearing a simple, albeit very lovely, red dress but when she turned around, she revealed a backless number teamed with stylish black cigarette pants and beautiful blue courts. Undoubtedly one of Emma’s finest moments and it was all down to Dior.
5. Carey Mulligan’s Great Gatsby Gown
The world fell even more in love with Carey Mulligan and her timeless style when she turned up to the premiere of The Great Gatsby in that pearly pink gown. The rain did nothing to dampen what was one of the chicest red carpet moments of the year. Perfection.
It’s safe to say that the red carpet will not be the same after Raf’s departure from Dior, but we’re sure he will continue to create waves in the fashion industry with what he does next.
