Former Made In Chelsea star Phoebe Letttice-Thompson has joined forces with cult East London clothing brand Illustrated People to create one of the coolest print-laden collections we’ve ever seen from a celebrity fashionista.
Featuring super cool co-ords, sporty slogan tees and one seriously amazing pair of eyeball-motif basketball shorts, the 22-piece collection is a kaleidoscope of Japanese-inspired prints, cartoons and phrases, all injected with one hefty dose of ’90s nostalgia.
‘I’ve been obsessed with Japan and Harajuku girls since I was 10,’ Phoebe told us. ‘So cute is the whole concept of the collection. But I didn’t want it to be too cute, because the whole idea of the Harajuku girl is that you have the cute mixed with the not so cute. So you have rotting eyeballs alongside pastel pinks and fluffiness. That clash has always been really appealing to me.’
Seeing the entire process through from start to finish, Phoebe not only designed the streetwear collection but also styled, photographed and cast the campaign herself. Impressive.
‘I made all of the prints myself, I did so much research,’ she said. ‘I grew up wanting a pet tarantula and to dye my hair black, so I’ve always liked gross things. That’s a big theme – hence the eyeballs.’
As well as skin-tight crops and frocks, there’s also plenty of oversized seperates and boyish silhouettes stamped with Phoebe’s signature tomboy edge.
‘I wear lots of boys clothes. I had two older brothers so I used to borrow their stuff a lot,’ she told us. ‘I lived in basketball shorts and baggy t-shirts all last summer. They’re so comfy and they’re perfect if you’re not really a bodycon girl. I could never find anything with mental prints though, so I thought, that’s what I’m going to make!’
So who would she love to see rocking her new collection?
‘Girls like Angel Haze, Jourdan Dunn and Iggy Azelea. There’s a long list of really cool girls I’d love to see in my stuff, but really it’s just whoever can pull it off.’
The Phoebe Lettice-Thompson X Illustrated People collection is on sale Topshop stores and online now.
