Following in the footsteps of Kate Moss and Daria Werbowy, new model Anna Ewers is the latest Mango campaign girl. The German beauty is being touted as the ‘next Claudia Schiffer’ – you can see why right? – and can also be found modeling in Marc Jacobs and Moschino’s spring ads. For Mango, she’s channeling everything from a preppy sporty vibe to the all-important 70s trend. That gold button tan suede jacket is a serious spring must-have. We caught up with the set-to-be-supermodel to chat all things fashion, food and Kate Moss…
Anna, you look amazing in the new Mango campaign. How do you prepare for a fashion shoot?
I try to eat healthy and get good rest to have the best energy for the days of the shoot.
How did you start modelling?
I went to Colombia for a year to go to High School there and learn Spanish. There was a model in my school and she told me to come with her to see her agency. That’s when I got photographed the first time. When I went back to Germany I didn’t really think about it anymore until I met my mother’s agent after I finished high school.
What do you love about Mango?
I think you can find beautiful pieces for every occasion. They have the cosiest sweaters, the jeans with the perfect fit but also good pieces for the evening. The Mango woman is fresh, cool, modern, beautiful and self-confident.
Mango campaigns always feature strong women like Kate Moss, Daria Werbowy, Scarlett Johansson and Penelope Cruz. How does it feel to join them? I haven’t met all of them personally but I definitely look up to all of them as they are hardworking, strong and beautiful women. They love what they do and feel very comfortable with themselves, just as I do. I was very lucky to meet Daria and Kate and they seemed so down to earth, very relaxed and normal. I think I can say the same thing of myself.
You’re being touted as the “next Claudia Schiffer”, what do you think of that?
I feel very honoured to be compared to such an iconic model.
Who is your style icon?
What will you be wearing this spring?
A well-fitting pair of jeans, loafers, a nice shirt and my favourite leather jacket.
Are you a shopaholic?
I wouldn’t say I’m a shopaholic but I like having a lot of clothes. My favourite shopping destination is definitely Paris. They have the best vintage stores ever.
Do you shop online?
I love doing vintage shopping online. You can find the amazing pieces because you can buy from anywhere in the world.
Whose wardrobe would you love to raid?
If you were a piece of clothing, what would you be?
A hat, because it’s on the top and has the best view.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
Don’t ever stress out and be happy to be who you are.
You’re one of the rising models of the moment, you have done many shows this season and are getting great campaigns – what’s next?
I am really happy to be where I am right now. I’m really excited there are so many things I want to do in life. I admire Daria Werbowy’s career.
What qualities do you think are necessary to succeed in the fashion business?
It’s important to have good energy, really important to appreciate the fact that you will have amazing photographs, be patient, like travelling, not stress out easily, feel comfortable with who you are and be thankful for every single tiny step you make.
How do you unwind after a long day?
I eat good food, relax and spend time with my boyfriend.
Talk us through your beauty regime…
I wake up in the morning, take a shower and then put a good moisturizer on and then a little mascara if I feel like it. Before I leave I put my favourite fragrance on and that’s pretty much it.
You’ve got 10 minutes to get ready and out for the evening, what is your quick fix?
Dry shampoo and deodorant.
How do you keep in shape?
I like walking everywhere and eating healthy.
What is on your bedside table?
My phone, a bottle of water and a book.
As a child what did you want to become when you grew up?
A musician until I realized I’m really not talented at all.
What is your favourite music?
I like Lou Reed, Marvin Gaye and Bob Moses.
I love good food! I like everything
Where is your ultimate destination?
I love Costa Rica! I love nature and it’s so beautiful there. I like it that they are supporting eco-tourism as well.
Where do you call home?
I actually feel home in New York now. I met the most amazing people here and I have really good friends. I couldn’t imagine being somewhere else anymore. I wish my friends from my hometown would just come over here as well. I miss them so much!
How often do you go back to your hometown of Freiburg in Germany?
I always go there after shows as it’s really close to Paris and then I like to spend Christmas at home as well.
What would you say defines a typical German?
Punctuality, efficiency, beer, good sausages and heavy food. I’m typically German!
If you weren’t modelling, what would you be doing?
I would have gone abroad for a while and then studied, maybe interior design or architecture.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time?
I hope I am going to be as happy as I am now, and doing something that I am passionate about.
