9 Lessons Disney Taught Us About Life

Disney films are a defining aspect of most people’s childhood. Regardless of how much time you spent watching your favourite Disney movies on repeat, they never got old.

While on the surface Disney films may appear to just be silly, childlike tales, they do in fact teach some rather valuable lessons. No topic is too serious for Disney to cover. From death to heartbreak to the sad treatment of animals, when you think about it, Disney can get pretty dark. Case in point: who didn’t shed a tear in Bambi?

We’ve taken a look back at some of the classics, and rounded up the important life lessons learnt from hours spent on the sofa.

1. Money can’t buy you happiness but it sure helps pay the rent

>

Classics such as Aladdin and Cinderella showed us how happiness is better than wealth but at the same time being poor also sucks. For example, Cinderella’s life was much better when she got to go to the ball…

2. Lying doesn’t get you anywhere in life

>

Disney teaches us that lying is never worth it in the long run, and people who are dishonest have to pay the price. Pinnochio being the prime example…

3. Not everyone you come across in life will be nice

>

Disney films were full of baddies. Cinderella’s step mum (and sisters), Cruella and The Hunchback of Notre Dame all taught us at a young age that sometimes you’ll have to deal with nasty people. Stay well clear…

4. You can’t be a child forever

>

With Wendy having to leave Neverland and Ariel saying goodbye to her father, Disney forced us to face the reality that childhood doesn’t last forever (sob!). But you can watch Disney films to keep you young…

5. If in doubt, always remember: just keep swimming

>

As Dory tells us in Finding Nemo: “When life gets you down, you know what you gotta do? Just keep swimming.”

6. It’s OK to be a little crazy. All the best people are…

>

Alice In Wonderland teaches us that there’s no harm in being different. “I’m not crazy. My reality is just different than yours,” said the Cheshire Cat.

7. You can have too much of a good thing

>

Winnie The Pooh taught us the dangers of over indulgence when he fell in the honey pot. This is one life lesson we probably still need to work on. *Devours whole biscuit tin*

8. Animal cruetly is all around us

>

From the dalmations to Dumbo, Disney did sure teach us a thing or two about having sympathy for animals.

9. And most importantly of all: don’t take life too seriously

>

All problems (well, nearly all of them) can be cured by singing, and Hakuna Matata is a good place to start.
