With the British Fashion Awards just around the corner, we’re all poised and ready to congratulate the winners. With a list of nominees as long as several arms, the likes of Victoria Beckham, Jourdan Dunn, Tom Ford and Stella McCartney are all up for big awards on the night. But there’s one prize that’s already been guaranteed, and it’s going to fashion’s very own Godfather: Karl Lagerfeld.
Yep, the Outstanding Achievement Award will be picked up (in person, we hope) by the 82-year old, who undoubtedly represents outstanding achievement more than anyone we know. In fact, it was recently revealed that scientists were keen to test Lagerfeld’s DNA, to try and discover how it is that the designer performs to the level he does. Not only is he the man behind Chanel, he also heads up Fendi and his own eponymous label, too. During his more than 50 years in the fashion industry, Lagerfeld has also been at the helm of Chloe, not to mention working initially as Pierre Balmain’s assistant.
If that’s not a CV to marvel at, we’re not sure what is. As famous for his withering put-downs, starched collars and beloved cat Choupette as he is his gargantuan fashion spectaculars (see Chanel’s most recent show), it’s perhaps even surprising that it’s taken this long for Lagerfeld to receive such an award.
Natalie Massenet, chair of the British Fashion Council said: “Karl Lagerfeld defines outstanding. He is the champion of excellence, the master of the exceptional and one of the most iconic figures globally from our industry. His life’s work for his own and so many extraordinary brands, has written the language of fashion. He is the ultimate visionary and we celebrate not only the decades already passed but those yet to happen. In Karl’s hands the future of fashion will be an exceptional one.” We couldn’t agree more.
The BFAs are on 23rd November in London, and you can see the full list of nominees here. Fingers crossed KL does attend to pick up his prize; just imagine the acceptance speech.
