After his scandalous departure from Christian Dior in 2011 and after what seems like an eternity away from the spotlight the Gibraltar-born, British designer John Galliano is back on the fashion frontline as creative director at avant garde French fashion house Maison Martin Margiela. The news finally confirms countless rumours doing the rounds in fashion land last week.
When the announcement was made just hours ago social media and news desks alike have gone into overdrive, however for some it seems like the designer has never been away at all, after all Galliano did in fact make an impact after just months after he left Dior when he designed a bespoke wedding dress for model and close friend Kate Moss as she famously married long-term beau rocker Jamie Hince in the English countryside.
Since then the designer has kept a relatively low-key profile joining Oscar de la Renta in 2013 where he worked on a collection and then opting to take on the role with Russian perfumer L’Etoile as creative director earlier this year. “John Galliano is one of the greatest, undisputed talents of all time – a unique, exceptional couturier for a maison that always challenged and innovated the world of fashion. I look forward to his return to create that fashion dream that only he can create, and wish him to here find his new home.” said Renzo Russo, president of OTB, which controls Margiela.
However Galliano, who is known world-wide for his blow-out fashion shows full of colour and flamboyance, may have to re-think his first collection for Margiela to fit in with the fashion house’s iconic direction aesthetic and reluctance to name a designer as the label’s “face”. His first show is apparently set for January 2015 and we can’t wait to see what styles the designer will carve out as he once again forges a fresh new start in his fashion career. Good luck John!
