The much-debated Hollywood gender pay dispute is back in the news today as Jennifer Lawrence and Amanda Seyfried speak out about their experiences. Joining the likes of Emily Blunt and Meryl Streep – who have also brought up the unfair pay issue in recent speeches – these Hollywood ladies are taking on the issue big time.
Amanda Seyfried – the mega-succesful movie star who has appeared in the likes of Mamma Mia! and Mean Girls – revealed in an interview with The Sunday Times that she has been paid dramatically less than her male co-stars. She explained:
“A few years ago, on one of my big budget films, I found I was being paid 10 per cent of what my male co-star was getting, and we were pretty even in status.” She added, “It’s not about how much you get, it’s about how fair it is.”
The actress starred alongside Justin Timberlake in Time, Dominic Cooper in Mamma Mia! and Channing Tatum in Dear John, but which film she is talking about, we can’t be sure as she hasn’t named any names. She’s not the only one who has faced this kind of discrimation either.
Jennifer Lawrence hit the headlines last year when it was revealed that she was being paid significantly less than her male co-stars in American Hustle. After speaking out about it, the Oscar winner is now looking at a very different situation. She is set to earn double what her male co-star, Chris Pratt will be paid in her next film, Passengers.
The always-loveable J Law was congratulated in an interview at Comic Con yesterday for, “Winning the gender wage gap fight.” The actress responded saying she wasn’t nearly as much of a “bad*ss” as her pal Taylor Swift who took on Apple and won!
And it’s not just in their pay that Hollywood actresses are facing discrimination – there have also been a number of age scandals of late, including a case where Maggie Gyllenhaal was not given a part because she was considered too old to play the lover of a 55-year-old man. She’s 37! Hopefully Jennifer Lawrence’s experience will soon become the norm with women earning at least what their male counterparts do!
