The annual CFDA Awards will take place in New York tonight and with only a few hours to go before the big event, we’re beginning to find out details about which celebrities and industry heavyweights will be involved in the festivities.
So far we’ve learnt that Pharrell Williams will be presented with the highly coveted “lifetime achievement” gong and the “fashion icon” award that went to Rihanna last year. This month’s US Vogue cover girl Amanda Seyfriend will present an award tonight along with Empire star Taraji P. Henson and Diane Kruger’s dreamy other half Joshua Jackson and it doesn’t end there. Kim Kardashian was recently added to the roster of presenters too. The reality queen will present the CFDA Media Award to Kevin Systrom, the founder of Instagram.
Typically given to a journalist, photographer or critic at the top of their field, this award is the one everyone’s talking about as it marks the first time it’s been awarded to a platform rather than a person and who represents the change better than Kim? At last count she boasts a whopping 34.7 million followers on Instagram and then there’s her book of selfies, which quickly climbed to the top spot in the photography category on Amazon when it was released last month.
The big question on everyone’s minds, though, is what the 34 year-old will wear. It will be her first outing since the announcement of her pregnancy on last night’s episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians so naturally, all eyes will be on her. It also marks the first time she’s attended the awards too and after Rihanna made headlines in that Swarovski crystal-covered Adam Selman dress, we’re sure Kim will want to make as much of a statement, even if she is a little more covered.
Kim’s BFFs with Balmain designer Olivier Rousteing so there is a chance she could turn to him for her gown. She’s also a big fan of Russian fashion designer Ulyana Sergeenko, who is a favourite among the fashion set and there’s also talk that she could be wearing Louis Vuitton after sitting front row at the brand’s show in Paris with hubby Kanye West back in March. But since the awards are all about celebrating American design talent, we have a niggling feeling she’s going to go all-patriotic and opt for a homegrown label.
As we previously reported, our favourite funny man James Corden will be presiding over the awards ceremony. And while he may not seem like the most obvious choice, 2012 saw Seth Meyers (comedian and host of US show Late Night With Seth Meyers) presenting the style set with their awards, suggesting that the Council of Fashion Designers of America have one hilarious sense of humour. It might have also helped that Corden’s BFF is none other than Anna Wintour. We’re not joking.
During her ’73 Questions’ interview with Vogue.com, Anna revealed Corden to be her favourite comedian, while the British actor told Heat radio: “I love her. When I was doing a play in New York, we used to go for lunch every month. I’d say I speak to her fairly frequently. I just really, really like her and we get on very well.” Who knew?
With the likes of Tom Ford, Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors, Alexander Wang and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen all up for awards, we can’t wait to see what Corden has up his sleeve. Whatever it is, we bet Anna’s going to love it…
