I Am Cait is the inspiring new reality TV documentary on E! that gives Caitlyn Jenner fans a candid insight into her new life. And we are HOOKED.
But there’s someone who’s still finding the Olympic athlete’s transition a little difficult to come to terms with – her ex-wife Kris Jenner.
When asked on Access Hollywood if she’s started calling Caitlyn – who used to be known as Kardashian patriarch Bruce – by her new name, Kris says: ‘No. I say ”Jenner”.’
She continues: ‘It’s hard, you know, it’s really, really hard. What I have realised in all of this is that everyone handles stuff a different way. No matter what it is, you know. We’re all people. We all have different emotions.’
Despite this, Kris says she’s ‘getting to know’ Caitlyn and learning the differences between her and Bruce.
‘Bruce had a distinct personality and, you know, had definite characteristics. And Caitlyn has some different ones, I feel,’ she says.
‘She came over for a drink last night. And that was nice.’
In the latest episode of I Am Cait, we saw Caitlyn at her emotional renaming ceremony (Boy George was there), which should have been a pretty big deal – except none of her family turned up.
The former Olympian was seen being serenaded by the singer before bursting into tears at the ceremony and telling her new transgender friends: ‘I feel at home and I have a family.’
And the emotion didn’t stop there.
Jenner then has a heart-to-heart with Kris, telling her she was hurt at not being invited to daughter Kylie’s gradation.
‘I was so disappointed in everybody’, she says. ‘For 15 years of my life I carpooled kids every day – some days I would spend three or four hours a day in the car – a slap in the face when you don’t even get invited to their graduation.’
A calm Kris replied: ‘Listen, usually people that get a divorce don’t do everything together. It wasn’t malicious.’
Previously, we saw Caitlyn finally making her swimsuit debut in a sexy white one-piece at a friend’s pool.
‘Putting on that bathing suit represents a lot to me,’ the former Olympian said afterwards. ‘It’s kind of scary because, you know, you’re exposing yourself. I’m about as nervous as can possibly be right now.’
But after plenty of her encouragment from her girlfriends (plus a lot of cheering when she eventually emerged), Caitlyn took the plunge.
‘Ok, I did it. I got the bathing suit on. It was nerve-racking, but it felt very freeing. And I did see my reflection in the glass door – looked pretty good’, she said.
We don’t know about you, but we’re loving the series so far. So what have we learnt about Cait? Well, let’s have a look…
1) Caitlyn’s wardrobe is amazing.
We were allowed a peek inside Caitlyn’s wardrobe in episode one, which was stocked full of to-die-for Tom Ford, Diane Von Furstenberg, and a whole host of other designers. But considering she totally nailed the ESPYs in that stunning white Versace dress, it’s hardly surprising…
2) Kim and Kanye have been super supportive.
We already knew Kim has been there through thick and thin with Caitlyn, but seeing Kanye rock up at Jenner’s house after her transition and praise her for her courage had to be one of the most touching moments of the episode. ‘You couldn’t have been up against more… And it was still like, F*** everybody, this is who I am,’, he said.
3) The first time daughter Kylie saw her, she called her ‘pretty’.
Far from being shocked by her father’s new look, we find out that the 18-year-old (who happened to be a teeny bit dozy after a dentist visit at the time) had the cutest reaction to seeing Cailtyn as a woman for the first time. When Kylie FaceTimes Jenner, she’s seen saying: ‘I don’t want to scare you..’, to which Kylie responds: ‘You’re not scaring me, you look pretty!’ Aw.
4) Antisocial Bruce is firmly in the past.
We loved Bruce, but there’s no denying he played the awkward, antisocial dad in Keeping Up With The Kardashians very well. But in the first episode, Caitlyn explains how that person is gone. She’s funny, outgoing and quite frankly, a bit of a joker, as seen when she refers to Bruce’s poor sense of style by holding up a less-than-fashionable striped shirt from her old wardrobe and saying: ‘What the hell was Bruce thinking?’ Hehe.
5) Caitlyn once considered suicide.
‘I’ve had some very dark moments in my life’, she admits in premiere episode. ‘I’ve been in my house with a gun and said, let’s just end it right here.’ While shocking, it’s spurred Jenner on make a difference by helping other transgender people with similar thoughts. The episode closes with Caitlyn visiting the family of a 14-year-old boy who recently committed suicide after being bullied for transitioning and releasing balloons in the teen’s memory.
