They’re one of those trends that have become so ubiquitous, they’re practically a wardrobe staple. From the catwalks to the high street, and even the red carpet, crop tops are everywhere. And, while a lot of us have fully embraced them, rocking them with just about everything, a lot of us still feel the fear at the prospect of baring our midriffs. But we’ve spotted a surge in the amount of A-list ladies choosing a crop top, wearing them in unexpected ways and elevating these tops to new levels of chic. In the interests of your wardrobe, we’ve brought you inspiration to help you become the top of the crops…
You might think that your smart separates are not to be seen with a crop top. But, as Kendall Jenner and Atlanta de Cadenet Taylor prove (above), they can actually give your tailoring a modern twist. Choose a long-sleeved style and wear with high-waisted trousers to channel Kendall’s polish; just add classic courts and a camel coat to finish your look, and you’re desk-to-disco ready. Or make like Atlanta in her tonal approach, pairing a simple midi/crop combo with a tailored trench and velvet sandals- the perfect dinner-date outfit, if you ask us.
Match With A Midi:
One of the easiest, and most flattering ways to work your crop top is with a full-skirted midi. But don’t think these skirts are just for after-dark, we love their daytime potential, too. Look to Girls star Allison Williams, who opted for Michael Kors’ blown-up blooms, keeping her accessories to a minimum with black court shoes. To dress it down even further, thrown your trusty biker jacket over the top, or try a cropped denim cover-up. Jennifer Lopez, meanwhile, shows us how to create this combo for nighttime. A jewel tone midi skirt and halter-neck crop will be your new night-out formula- just add a clutch and some J-lo hoops, if you dare.
Opt For An Overlay:
Red carpet pros Marion Cotillard and Keira Knightley have been showing us how to take a crop top from simple to showstopper- rock it with your snazziest frock. Yup, these demure ladies both opted for crop top style, proving that you don’t have to flash the flesh to make it work. Keira’s Chanel number is actually a dress, but we love the two-part nature of her look. Disgusing her baby bump, the clash of textures in the appliqued top and printed skirt adds edge to the more conservative shape. And, Marion’s dramatic Dior couture creation still has us swooning, and just goes to show the power of a super simple, black crop top. We bow down. Luckily, Asos has some crop top dresses to help us nail it. Red carpets, we’re coming for you…
