Hooray. Halloween is only a couple days away, and (as always) we’re super excited.
Not only is it the time of year when it becomes perfectly acceptable to dress up in something ridiculous and party like a mad thing, but Halloween also gives you total carte blanche to stay in ALL weekend, eat tons of junkfood, and binge watch scary movies. Yay!
And because we love a good fright, we’ve come up with our favourite movie horror queens of all time. Did we learn any life lessons from these girls? We’ll see….
1. Sally (Marilyn Burns) from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
Now if there’s a girl that can scream for England (and Texas apparently) it’s the heroine of cult ’70s horror The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. In fairness, if a chainsaw wielding lunatic and a family of cannibals interrupted our road-trip holiday we’d be pretty annoyed about it too.
Life Lesson: DON’T pick up hitchhikers in Texas.
2. Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp) from A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984)
Anyone who wasn’t petrified as a child by the thought of blade-fingered Freddy Krueger coming to get you, doesn’t know what real fear is. Fact. Nancy Thompson’s crusade at the end of the movie to slay nasty old Freddie was nothing short of terrifying. Plus, it was the movie your babysitter always let you watch on the sly. ‘One two, Freddie’s coming for you….’
Life Lesson: Don’t fall asleep if there’s a dream stalking serial killer on the loose.
3. Carrie White (Sissy Spacek) in
Poor Carrie White. The butt of all the popular kids’ jokes, a religious nut for a mother, and a bit of a nasty temper – it was never going to end well was it? Throw in a prom, a bucket of pigs blood and some telekinetic powers and you’ve got one hell of a finale. Plus the final scene never fails to make us jump.
Life Lesson: Don’t mock girls for getting their period. It’ll come back tenfold.
4. Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) in Scream (1996)
Now while Sidney did spend rather a lot of time doing silly things like running up stairs instead of pegging it out the front door, she turned out to be one tough cookie – especially if you look at the ridiculous amount of attempts made on her life during the entire Scream franchise, by various different nutjobs. Bless Sidney. It was hopeless having friends really.
Life Lesson: Don’t date boys with a shady past. This is what Facebook is for.
5. Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) in Buffy The Vampire Slayer (1997-2003)
Now before you all start, we know Buffy isn’t strictly a movie scream queen, however she did manage to kick a lot of supernatural ass over the years, and we feel she deserves a place on this list. Despite crossing a few (slightly) dodgy sexual boundaries, her moral fibre when it came to saving the world from vampires was second to none. She ruled.
Life Lesson: Always have a sharpened stake tucked in the back of your bootcut jeans.
6. Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) in the Alien Movies (1979-1997)
Anyone that can survive not one, but FOUR encounters with that frightening creature is a total badass in our books. Plus, Ripley is the only girl we know that can make grey marl underwear look in any way good. She is tough beyond any human measure, and we think she’s the bomb.
Life Lesson: Lightening (or an alien in this case) can strike twice. Try living on Earth for a while Rippers’
7. Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) in Halloween (1978)
It can be argued that Laurie Strode is the original scream queen, and for good reason. Not only was she a virtuous girl with smashing book smarts, she also managed to survive the murderous will of masked loony Michael Myers. And continued to do so over the sequels. All hail Jamie Lee.
Life Lesson: Be a smart girl. Stick to your books instead of boys and you will survive anything. Including knife wielding psychos.
8. Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) in The Silence Of The Lambs (1991)
Oh Clarice. Can you hear the lambs? The (kind of) creepy friendship between a talented young FBI agent and a Chanti-loving lunatic winds up with the intrepid Clarice Starling catching a serial killer more bonkers than Anthony Hopkins himself. Awesome.
Life Lesson: Sometimes having a slightly crazy friend works in your favour.
9. Casey Becker (Drew Barrymore) in Scream (1996)
Never has 12 minutes proved to be so influential. Drew’s stint as popular Woodsboro teen Casey Becker was short lived, but wow, did she turn the horror movie tables. That crackly phonecall and the resulting blood bath on the patio afterwards changed the genre forever. How? Well, it meant that ANYONE could be next.
Life Lesson: Don’t engage in a test of horror movie trivia with someone who has infinitely better film knowledge than you.
10. Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) in Psycho (1960)
Finally, we couldn’t wind up without giving special mention to Janet Leigh. The most iconic shower scene of all time, and giving rise to the beginnings of of the ‘slasher’ movie, 1960’s Psycho is still a frightening watch. Plus, bit of trivia for ya. Janet Leigh also happens to be Jamie Lee Curtis’ mum. Imagine Christmas…
Life Lesson: Never shower without locking the door.
