Today marks the 52nd birthday of American fashion designer, cult trendsetter and celeb BFF Marc Jacobs. Yup, he might not look it but the fashion maestro is over half a century old now, and instead of sending a card, we thought we’d compile some of our very favourite MJ moments in celebration. From elaborate catwalks to model muses, Marc is one of fashion’s most ingenious entertainers. Here’s just a few of our best bits…
1. Louis Vuitton
Way back in 1997, Marc Jacobs was appointed LV’s creative director, making him the brand’s first ever ready-to-wear designer. And, aside from crafting the fashion house’s RTW aesthetic, Marc also staged some of the most outlandish, opulent and playful catwalks fashion week has ever seen. From gigantic escalators and fully operating steam trains to catwalk carousels and a cigarette-touting Kate Moss, the Louis Vuitton runways have become the stuff of legend, since replaced by a quieter approach from new designer Nicolas Ghesquiere. But for his final show, MJ went out with a suitable bang thanks to Edie Campbell walking naked, her body painted with the LV monogram. Now that’s what we call a talking point.
2. Celeb Pals
Marc Jacobs has a pretty impressive list of famous buddies. Kate Moss, Victoria Beckham, Nicki Minaj, Cara Delevingne…we could go on, but we’d be here all day. The A-list ladies love him so much that a few have even appeared in campaigns for him. Remember those ads featuring VB in a Marc Jacobs shopping bag? We definitely can’t imagine Posh Spice doing that for anyone else…
3. Instagram Casting
Always one to stay ahead of the game, Marc Jacobs launched the #CastMeMarc campaign last year to find new faces for Katie Hillier and Luella Bartley’s first A/W campaign for Marc by Marc Jacobs via Instagram and Twitter. The drive had over 70.000 applicants, and the latest Insta-search is already underway. Get your best selfies in quick!
4. Marc by Marc Jacobs
Marc’s diffusion line, Marc by Marc Jacobs launched in the spring of 2001 and provided many fans with their first piece of exclusive MBMJ merchandise. From phone covers to brightly coloured crossbody bags, this quirky offshoot sadly ended last month, but we’ll forever have the memories.
Mister Jacobs is one talented little chap. Not only did he win Womenswear Designer of the Year for two years running back in the ‘90s, he has also won Menswear Designer of the Year once (2002), and Accessory Designer of the Year FOUR times. Oh, and he also won a Lifetime Achievement Award back in 2011. Where DOES he find the room for all those trophies?
6. Diet Coke
Amongst all his other jobs, Marc also found the time to become Diet Coke’s creative director in 2013. His fun and colourful designer cans suddenly made our
Diet Coke break look a lot more stylish…
7. Charity Work
Marc has an ongoing relationship with a Cancer Research project entitled ‘Protect The Skin You’re In’ which sees well known celebrities posing nude on t-shirts to help raise awareness about melanoma. The likes of Miley Cyrus, Naomi Campbell and Victoria Beckham have all leant their name to the cause.
Marc’s dogs are almost as famous as he is. His bull-terrier Neville starred in his very own campaign for BookMarc and has over 102,000 followers on Instagram.
9. Miley Cyrus
She of the Twerk has not only been a face of the Marc brand, she has also shown support for the designer’s belief in same-sex marriage and gay rights. She famously took to Instagram last year wearing an MJ designed shirt demanding equality. Good work, Miley.
10. The Abs
We had to mention that gym-honed bod. Marc loves to take his shirt off, regularly posing semi-nude for various photo shoots. He even posed naked for the campaign to promote his ‘Bang’ fragrance. Not exactly the shy and retiring type, then…
