It’s hard to believe that there was ever a world pre-Lena Dunham. Ever since she and Girls exploded into our lives, at a time when we were still mourning the end of Sex And The City, we’ve come to think of her as a close personal friend. She’s changed our TV habits for the better, and she’s made us re-evaluate everything we thought we knew about on-screen sex scenes. Yep, she’s an inspiration to us all and to celebrate her 29th birthday, we’ve decided to share just some of the reasons why we love her so much…
Her Quirky Red Carpet Style
We love the fact that Lena isn’t frightened to take sartorial risks at a-list events. Much like her work, Lena’s look is 100% individual, and that takes some gumption in a world obsessed with following the latest celeb trend. And we think that’s all kind of awesome. Plus, she’s old friends with Zac Posen (he used to babysit her) which is doubly awesome.
The HBO show written, produced, and directed by Ms Dunham has been somewhat of a feminine revolution for a generation of young women since it aired in 2012, and quite rightly so. Surrounding the lives of four friends trying to live the NYC dream (and starring Lena as the self-obsessed yet adorable Hannah), Girls is an innovative and seriously self-deprecating look at the struggles we ladies face on the quest for professional and romantic nirvana. Plus, Lena is naked in it. A lot.
By the age of 28, Lena had two Golden Globes under her belt (best comedy series and best actress in a comedy series), had authored a warts n’all book about her turbulant teenage years (Not That Kind of Girl), and became the first woman to have won a Directors’ Guild Award for Outstanding Director in a Comedy Series. By anyone’s standards, that is hella impressive, especially when the girl has got another whole year before reaching 30. What’s next we wonder? Bravo Lena.
She’s BFFs with Tay Tay
Yep, of course Lena was going to have rad mates right? I mean, her Girls pals are already pretty amazing, but off camera Lena counts the equally world-conquering Taylor Swift as a bestie, and we think that’s pretty cool. We wonder what their pajama parties are like….
She’s a Feminist
With the likes of Emma Watson advocating greater equality for women everywhere, the irrepressibly candid Lena has also given voice to the cause through her work, social media, and in interviews.
‘Feminists believe that men and women should have the same opportunities. If you are a feminist you believe in equal rights as a whole. That’s not a concept you can really shoot down.’
The girl makes a darn good point.
From sleeping in last night’s make-up, to mashing pizza into her face, Lena’s Instagram is living proof that she’s just as joe-soap as the rest of us. She certainly isn’t frightened to let the world see that she’s far from perfect, and we can TOTALLY relate to that.
Despite her meteoric rise to stardom, Lena still feels as awkard and self-concious as the rest of us.
‘I still go to a party and say something embarrassing to someone, and then write them a weird e-mail about it the next day, and then write them a text because I think they didn’t get the e-mail. No matter what happens with your level of success, you still have to deal with all the baggage that is yourself.’
Happy Birthday Lena. You rock.
